India's 1st dugong conservation reserve to be in Tamil NaduThe Tamil Nadu government announced plans to set up India’s first Dugong Conservation Reserve in the Palk Bay on the southeast coast of the state.
- Minister of Forests K Ramachandran said that in order to protect the species, Dugong Marine Conservation Reserve will be established in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay area with community participation.
- The Marine Conservation Reserve will cover an area of 500km in Palk Bay.
Gujarat government has announced an 11 per cent hike in dearness allowance for its employees and pensioners with effect from 1st July.
- The new DA rate will be 28 per cent.The Central government had raised DA for its employees from 17 per cent to 28 per cent in July.
- More than 14 lakh employees and pensioners of Gujarat government will get the benefit following this decision. The hike in DA will cost the state exchequer 378 crore rupees every month. The new DA will reflect in the salary of the current month, while arrears of July and August will be paid in two installments by the year end.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh launched COVID-19 Affected Livelihood Support Scheme to provide assistance to those who had been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the State.
- The Chief Minister stated that the applications were invited for the scheme through a proper survey at the district levels and added that a total of 22,336 applications had been received so far.
- Out of the applications received, 7,943 had been verified, and of this first installment of Rs 2500 would be distributed to 6,276 applicants bearing a total amount of around Rs 1.56 crore.

Bilateral exercise – AUSINDEX between Indian Navy & Royal Australian Navy beginsThe bilateral exercise – AUSINDEX between Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy commenced in Australia.It will continue till 10th of this month.
- This edition of exercise includes complex surface, sub-surface and air operations between ships, submarines, helicopters and Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
- The participating Indian Naval Ships Shivalik and Kadmatt are the latest indigenously designed and built Guided Missile Stealth Frigate and Anti-Submarine Corvette.

Punjab signs MoU with Amcham India to promote investment, ease of businessThe Punjab government and the American Chamber of Commerce in India (Amcham India) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote investment in the state as well as further increase the ease of doing business for US member companies. The MoU was signed during the 29th annual general meeting of the Amcham India.
- The first-of-its-kind MoU that Amcham India signed with any state will see the formation of a joint working group (JWG), which will include members from Invest Punjab and the American trade body.
- They will work together to support and develop investment cooperation, as well as for enhancing the ease of doing business in Punjab, India and the US.

Bumrah breaks Kapil Dev's record, becomes fastest Indian pacer to pick 100 Test wicketsJasprit Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 100 wickets in the longest format of the game. Bumrah achieved the feat in the ongoing fourth Test against England when he removed Ollie Pope for 2 in the second session of the final day.
- With Pope's wicket, Bumrah broke former Indian skipper Kapil Dev's record. Kapil Dev had taken 25 Tests to reach 100 wickets while Bumrah achieved the milestone in his 24th game.
- Former India bowler Irfan Pathan is next on the list, having reached 100 wickets in 28 matches while pacer Mohammed Shami occupies the fourth spot.

Cyrus Poncha elected VP of Asian Squash FederationCyrus Poncha, secretary of Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), was elected the vice-president of the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) for a four-year term at the 41st ASF AGM held virtually.
- The other elected VPs are Fayez Abdullah S. Al Mutairi (Kuwait) and Tae-sook Heo (Korea).
- David Mui of Hong Kong was elected unopposed for his second term as the president.
The International Legal Assistance Consortium has elected Advocate Prashant Kumar to its board of directors.
- Kumar, also president of the Bar Association of India, is the second Asian to serve on ILAC's board.He is the second Asian to serve on the Board of ILAC.
- Kumar is known to specialise in constitutional, commercial and civil matters, arbitration, intellectual property and information technology law, apart from infrastructure, power, public private partnership and anti dumping. He was previously the president of Law Association for Asia and Pacific.

Shailendra Singh wins global award in turtle conservationIndian biologist Shailendra Singh has been awarded the Behler Turtle Conservation Award for bringing three critically endangered turtle conservation species back from the brink of extinction.
- The award has been bestowed by several global bodies involved in turtle conservation such as Turtle Survival Alliance, IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group, Turtle Conservancy, and the Turtle Conservation Fund.
- Shailendra Singh was named to lead the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA)/ Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) India turtle programme.

India’s first bio-brick based building inaugurated at IIT HyderabadIndia’s first bio-brick based building was inaugurated at Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) by Director B.S. Murty.
- A prototype of the guard cabin was designed and set up in the space allocated by IIT-H. It is part of the Bold Unique Idea Lead Development (BUILD) project to demonstrate the strength and versatility of the material. The sample building is made up of bio-bricks supported by a metal framework.
- The roof is also made of bio-bricks over PVC sheets to reduce heat. Both inside and outside walls are cement-plastered to protect the bio-bricks from rain.
OBITUARIES
Jean-Pierre Adams, former France defender, passes awayFormer France defender Jean-Pierre Adams has died aged 73 after almost 40 years in a coma, his former club Nimes announced.
- Adams, who made 22 international appearances in the 1970s, slipped into a coma after a mistake by the anaesthetist during routine knee surgery in 1982.
American actor, Michael K Williams, who portrayed the character Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire, passed away. He was 54.
- The actor was popular for his role 'Omar Little' in the gritty TV series The Wire and as Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire. He was a regular on many acclaimed TV shows and had most recently appeared in HBO's "Lovecraft Country" and the series "F Is for Family."
