India signs pact for social housing units in MaldivesEXIM Bank of India has concluded Agreements with Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation Limited (FDC) of Maldives to extend Buyers Credit of around $228 million for the construction of 4000 Social Housing Units in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
- The construction will be undertaken by National Buildings Construction Company (NBCC) and JMC Projects (India) Ltd. The companies have rich experience in real estate developmentand civil construction projects, both in India and abroad.
London, Mumbai and Bangalore have featured among the world’s top startup hubs, according to a comprehensive ranking of international startup hubs compiled by Startup Genome for its annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2021.
- Silicon Valley held onto the top spot this year while Beijing and Boston came in fourth and fifth respectively. Despite Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic, London maintained its second-place ranking tied with New York for the second year in a row.
- Bangalore also ranked in the top 30 global tech hubs (#23 globally) and Delhi made it into the top 40 list, coming in at 36th. Mumbai maintained its first position in the Emerging Ecosystems ranking outperforming other fast-growing ecosystems in areas of funding, performance, marke research and talent.
India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have formally launched negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that aims at expanding bilateral trade and investment between the two nations.
- The first round of CEPA negotiations held. Both nations aim to sign a deal in six months.
- A new strategic economic agreement between both nations is expected to increase bilateral trade in goods to $100 billion within five years of the agreement being signed and increase trade in services to $15 billion.
The Haryana Cabinet approved the implementation of the Mukhyamantri Bagwani Bima Yojana (MBBY), an assurance-based scheme to compensate crop losses due to adverse weather and natural calamities for farmers growing horticulture crops.
- Under this scheme, farmers need to give only 2.5 per cent, that is Rs 750 for vegetable and spice crop and Rs 1000 for fruit crops against a sum assured of Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively.
- The scheme will be optional. A seed capital of Rs 10 crore will be kept by the state government for the scheme.

Accra named UNESCO World Book Capital 2023The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has named Accra (Ghana) as UNESCO World Book Capital for 2023, following the evaluation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.
- After Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2022, the city of Accra was selected for its strong focus on young people and their potential to contribute to the culture and wealth of Ghana.
- Accra’s proposed programme seeks to use the power of books to engage these young people, as an effective way of skilling up the next generation.
BANKING & FINANCE
Bank Deposits Grow By 11.90% In FY21 Says RBIBank deposits grew by 11.9 per cent on a year-on-year basis during the financial year 2020-21 compared to 8.8 per cent in the previous year on the back of high growth in current account and savings account (CASA) deposits, the RBI data showed.
- Also, the share of CASA deposits increased to 43.7 per cent in March 2021 from 41.7 per cent a year ago, the RBI said. Among institutional categories, the household sector held 64.1 per cent share in total deposits, the central bank said.
- Individuals were the major constituent of the household sector and contributed 55.8 per cent in aggregate deposits. Bank deposits of non-financial corporations surged by 18.8 percent during 2020-21 and their share in total deposits increased to 16.2 percent in March-2021, the RBI said.
- Among the stated, Maharashtra, UP and Karnataka held one-third of total household sectors’ outstanding deposits and over 40 per cent of its incremental deposits during 2020-21, the RBI said.

Government e Marketplace bags prestigious CIPS AwardGovernment e Marketplace (GeM) was announced as the winner in the "Best Use of Digital Technology" category at the CIPS Excellence in Procurement Awards 2021 (CIPS Awards).

NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station located in the Himalayan State of Sikkim has been conferred with the prestigious Blue Planet Prize by International Hydropower Association (IHA), a London based non-profit membership association operating in 120 countries.
- The award for Teesta-V Power Station was announced during the World Hydropower Congress, 2021.
- The award had been conferred to Teesta-V Power Station based on its sustainability assessment undertaken by a team of accredited lead assessors of IHA in 2019 using the Operation Stage tool of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) of IHA.

AICTE to Set Up Training Centre in Haryana for Its IDEA Lab InitiativeThe All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will set up a training centre in Haryana soon for its Idea Development, Evaluation and Application (IDEA) Lab initiative, its member-secretary has said.
- AICTE-IDEA Labs are being established across the country to encourage students for application of science, technology engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fundamentals towards enhanced hands-on experience, learning by doing and even product visualisation.
