Gram Samridhi Yojana: New scheme to help unorganised food processing sector

India’s food processing ministry is working on a new scheme Gram Samridhi Yojana to bolster the unorganised food processing sector concentrated in rural areas. Gram Samridhi Yojana also aims to provide common facility centres and business incubators in rural areas.

  • The Rs 3,000 crore scheme funded by the World Bank and the Centre will help cottage industry, farmer producers’ organisation and individual food processors to increase capacity.

  • The maximum cap of subsidy to be given to a unit will be Rs 10 lakh, apart from interest subsidy, if they avail of loans. There is a provision for getting subsidy on bank interest by 3% to 5%.


Every poor household in Tripura will have LPG connection in 2019: Dharmendra Pradhan

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan said that Tripura is country's number one gas producing point and every poor household in the state will have LPG connection in 2019.

  •  ONGC Tripura has recorded its highest ever production at 4.96 MMSCMD (Million Metric Standard Cubic Meter Per Day). The ONCG will fulfil all the energy requirement of the state with regard to power plants, domestic industries, transportation and domestic fuel.


IIT-Delhi scientists create ‘DotBook’, India’s first Braille laptop for visually-impaired



The alumnus and researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi have created a laptop for visually-impaired. In what they claim to be a first in the country, the laptop has an interface in form of dots or Braile instead of a visual one. The researchers have named it ‘DotBook’.

  • Instead of a screen, the laptop displays embossed text in Braille through a touchpad. Users get to feel everything a website has by touching the pad.

7th RCEP inter-sessional ministerial meeting held in Cambodia

Commerce ministers of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) countries including India and China held a crucial meeting in Cambodia. The 16-member Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) bloc aims to cover among the issues related to goods, services, investments, economic and technical cooperation, competition and intellectual property rights. The meet saw bilateral sessions and an opening ceremony attended by Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia wins gold in Bulgaria

India's star wrestler Bajrang Punia has won a gold medal in 65 kilogram freestyle in Bulgaria. The tournament, Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov was held in Ruse, Bulgaria.

Pooja Dhanda wins gold in Bulgaria

Indian wrestler Pooja Dhanda claimed gold in the 59kg category in Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov tournament held in Ruse, Bulgaria.

Roger Federer wins his 100th tour title

Roger Federer made history at the Dubai Championship as he defeated reigning champion Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4 to win his 100th tour-level title. The 37-year-old is just the second player to accomplish this feat, joining Jimmy Connors who has tour-level title 109 times.

Former Chief Justice of Gauhati HC Ajit Singh appointed as first Lokayukta of Odisha

Former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajit Singh is appointed as the first Lokayukta of Odisha. Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal has approved his name following the recommendation of selection committee headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. 

  • Singh held the post of Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court till his retirement last year.

Indian-American teen awarded for invention to improve brain cancer treatment

Kavya Kopparapu, an Indian-American teenager has been conferred with the 2019 National STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education Award for her ground-breaking invention designed to improve treatments for glioblastoma, the deadliest form of brain cancer.

  • The $10,000 award given by STEM Education US, recognises Kavya Kopparapu of Herndon, Virginia, as an "extraordinarily talented and accomplished" individual "who has meaningfully promoted STEM education".


Tripura's tribal musician Thanga awarded first AB Vajpayee Life Time Achievement Award

Tripura’s Thanga Darlong, the last tribal musician to play Rosem a bamboo made a flute-like musical instrument, was conferred the Atal Behari Vajpayee Life Time Award during the 37th Agartala Book Fair in Agartala. 

  • In January, the 99-year old tribal musician and music guru was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award for his contribution to the field of music.
