Japan announces Rs 22 lakh for Kolkata museum

The Japanese government announced a donation of some Rs 22 lakh ($31,800) to the Rabindra Bharati Museum in Kolkata in a bid to strengthen historical and cultural ties with India. To refurbish the Japan Gallery of the museum, a MoU will be signed between the Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, Masayuki Taga, and the Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury.

  • The renovated and refurbished Japan Gallery in the Jorasanko Thakurbari campus of the University will go a long way to commemorate Rabindranath Tagore's contribution in the Japan-India relations.


Supreme Court orders mediation to settle Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri dispute in 8 weeks

The Supreme Court has referred the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case for mediation and has appointed former apex court judge Justice (retd) F M I Kalifulla as chairperson of the panel of mediators.

  • A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the other members of the panel will be spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu.


India's data usage to grow at 73% CAGR by 2022: Assocham-PwC Study

India's data consumption is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 72.6 per cent to 10,96,58,793 million MB by 2022, according to a study. "With lower-than-ever data tariffs and increasing number of smartphone penetration in the country, which is around 40 per cent as of 2017, it is safe to assume that the Video on Demand (VoD) market will be a significant beneficiary of these developments. Internet consumption is clearly on the rise in India," according to the Assocham-PwC study.

116-year-old Japanese woman officially named oldest person



A 116-year-old Japanese woman has been honoured as the world's oldest living person by Guinness World Records. The global authority on records officially recognised Kane Tanaka in a ceremony at the nursing home where she lives in Fukuoka, in southwest Japan. She was born in January 1903.

  • The previous oldest living person was another Japanese woman, Chiyo Miyako, who passed away last July, aged 117.

In a first, SBI links pricing of loans, deposits to repo rate

In a first-of-its kind move that will ensure faster monetary transmission, the nation's largest lender State Bank of India announced linking of its savings deposits rates and short-term loans to the RBI's repo rate. The new rates linked the external benchmark rate of the repo rate, will be effective May 1.

  • It will link the savings bank deposits, with balance above Rs 1 lakh to the repo rate with current effective rate being 3.50 percent per annum, which is 2.75 percent below the present repo rate. The bank has also linked all cash credit accounts and overdrafts with limits above Rs 1 lakh to the repo rate plus a spread of 2.25 percent.

Kavinder Singh Bisht fetches gold at Finland boxing tourney

Kavinder Singh Bisht struck gold while Shiva Thapa and three others claimed silver medals to end a fine Indian campaign at the 38th GeeBee Boxing Tournament in Helsinki, Finland. Signing off with silver medals were three-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa, rookie Govind Sahani, Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Mohammed Hussamuddin and Dinesh Dagar.

  • In a rare all-Indian final, a gritty Bisht was up against Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Hussamuddin in the 56kg summit clash.

Ashu Khullar appointed as Citibank India CEO

Citigroup has named Ashu Khullar as the new India head after its current chief executive officer Pramit Jhaveri steps down. Khullar is currently the head of capital markets origination for the Asia-pacific region. Having joined Citi in 1988, he has worked across both developed and emerging markets in Europe, Middle East Africa and India.

  • Citi India's current CEO Jhaveri will take charge as vice-chairman of banking, capital markets and advisory, Asia Pacific, from April 1.

Mohammad Shtayyeh named as Palestinian PM

Mohammad Shtayyeh has been named as Palestinian Prime Minister by President of Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas. A member of the West Bank's dominant Fatah party is a long time ally of Abbas.

  • The announcement comes six weeks after Rami al-Hamdallah tendered his resignation from the post and of his unity government to President Mahmoud Abbas, underscoring the failure of Hamas and Fatah to implement a power-sharing deal.
