Guinea PM arrives in India to attend conclave on 'India-Africa Project Partnership'

Prime Minister of Republic of Guinea Ibrahima Kassory Fofana arrived on a ten-day visit to attend the 14th edition of CII-EXIM Bank conclave on 'India-Africa Project Partnership.' Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organising the conclave with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

  • Fofana will also be attending a programme in Vishakhapatnam from March 21- 24. He will be emplaning for his country on March 25.

Tata, Reliance and Airtel emerge best Indian brands of 2019

Tata, Reliance and Airtel emerged as the top three Indian brands of 2019, according a report published by Interbrand, part of the Omnicom Media Group, an advertising and public relations conglomerate. Tata continued to hold the top position in the best Indian Brands ranking as its brand value grew by 6%, mainly due to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

  • Knocking its competitor Airtel off from the second spot, Reliance's brand value grew by 12%, bolstered by the success of Jio. Following Airtel at number three, HDFC Bank, LIC, State Bank of India, Infosys, Mahindra, ICICI Bank and Godrej rounded off the top 10 list.


IIT KGP signs MoU with C-DAC for high performance computing

The IIT Kharagpur has signed an MoU with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to set up a Petaflop high performance computing facility and data center funded under the National Supercomputing Mission. 

  • PetaFlop is the measurement of computing power based on the frequency of mathematical calculations that can be done per second. Setting up of the 1.3 PetaFlop high performance computing facility and data center is going to change the face of computation-based research and development in India.

Brazil hosted first BRICS Sherpa Meeting

The first BRICS Sherpa meeting under the Presidency of Brazil concluded at Curitiba in Brazil. Secretary, Economic Relations in the Ministry of External Affairs, T S Tirumurti led the Indian delegation at the two-day meeting. Brazil has identified countering terrorism as one of its priority areas for BRICS under its presidency.

  • During the meeting, India conveyed its support for the priority areas set out by Brazil, particularly to take forward BRICS cooperation on counter terrorism in a meaningful and concrete manner with BRICS member countries.


SCO’s RATS Council Meeting held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

India, Pakistan and the other members states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will take part in a joint anti-terrorism exercise to be held this year by the grouping. The decision to hold the joint exercise 'Sary-Arka-Antiterror 2019' was announced during the 34th meeting of the SCO's Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) council held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. 

  • The SCO, in which China plays an influential role, is also comprised of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.

Cyclone Idai hit the port city of Beira

Cyclone Idai, which is carrying heavy rains and winds of up to 177 km/h (106 mph), made landfall at the port city of Beira. The cyclone has now moved west towards Zimbabwe. It follows a week of storms and heavy rains in in Mozambique and Malawi that have killed more than 100 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Kohli, Bumrah retain no. 1 spot in ODI rankings

Indian captain Virat Kohli and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah have retained their respective number one positions in the ICC ODI player rankings. Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who are ranked one and two in the batsmen rankings respectively while New Zealand's former captain Ross Taylor has managed to retain the third spot.

  • In the list for bowlers led by Bumrah, two formerly top-ranked players have made significant gains. New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult has moved up one place to second while South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir has gained seven slots to reach the fourth place.

Manmohan Singh presents award to Arun Jaitley for implementing GST

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented the BusinessLine Changemaker Of The Year award to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over successful implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Jaitley received the award on behalf of the GST Council.

  • The award was also presented to the petitioners against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalised homosexuality. 


Swati Shingade bags first prize of DD Mahila Kisan Award

Swati Shingade of Pune, Maharashtra has bagged the first prize of DD Mahila Kisan Award for 2018-19. Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash gave away the award to Ms Shingade at a grand finale event organised by DD Kisan Channel in New Delhi.

  • As many as 110 women farmers participated in the award competition, out which five were selected for the grand finale.










OBITUARIES


Goa CM Manohar Parrikar passes away



Goa Chief Minister Manohar Gopalakrishna Prabhu Parrikar passed away in Panaji after a prolonged illness. He was 63. He was diagnosed with a pancreatic ailment in February last year.

  • He served as Chief Minister of the state during October 2000 to February 2005; and March 2012 to November 2014. From November 2014 till March 2017, he served as the Union Defence Minister. Mr Parrikar returned to Goa in March 2017 as the State Chief Minister.
