34th edition of AAHAR - International Food and Hospitality fair-begins in New Delhi

The 34th edition of Aahar - the International Food and Hospitality Fair commenced in New Delhi. The five-day fair, organised by India Trade Promotion Organisation, ITPO, features wide range of food products, machinery, food and beverages equipment, hospitality and decor solutions, confectionery items from over 560 participants from India and foreign countries.

  • The foreign participants in the fair are from countries including China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Russia, Spain, USA and UK among others.

Indo-Oman joint military exercise, Al-Nagah-II, begins at Jabel Al Akhdar Mountains

Exercise Al Nagah III, third in the series of bilateral joint exercise between India and Oman began at Jabel Al Akhdar Mountains in Oman. The exercise will see both the armies exchanging expertise and experience in tactics, weapon handling and firing, with an aim to enhance interoperability in counterterrorist operations in semi urban mountainous terrain.

  • India-Oman bilateral security ties have continued to develop since the beginning of India-Oman Joint Military Cooperation meetings in 2006.

Pinaka guided weapons system successfully test fired

The indigenously developed Pinaka guided rocket system was successfully test fired at Pokhran desert in Rajasthan, in a boost to artillery capability of the Army. The weapon system is equipped with state-of-the-art guidance kit comprising of an advanced navigation and control system. 

  • The indigenously developed guided Pinaka, developed by DRDO, will significantly boost the capability of the artillery to make precision hits.

Dipa Karmakar gets Barbie modelled after her



Gymnast Dipa Karmakar was honoured by 'Barbie' in celebration of their 60th anniversary and was presented a doll modelled after her. She was part of the ‘Shero’ program launched in 2015 by the company.

  • Dipa Karmakar was the first Indian female gymnast to ever compete in the Olympic Games and the first Indian female artistic gymnast to win a gold medal at a global event.


Arecanut gets its first GI tag for 'Sirsi Supari'



Arecanut (also known as supari or betel nut) is the latest entrant in the list of agricultural produce with a GI (geographical indication) tag. The Registrar of Geographical Indications, Government of India, accorded a GI tag, ‘Sirsi Supari’, to arecanut grown in Sirsi, Siddpaur and Yellapur taluks of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka.

  • The World Intellectual Property Organisation defines GI as a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

Saudi Arabia replaces India as world's largest arms importer

Saudi Arabia has now become the largest importer of arms in the world, having pushed India to the second spot, according to the premier Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In its report on ‘Trends in International Arms Transfers 2018’ released recently, the institute identified Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Australia and Algeria as the 5 top arms importing countries and the United States, Russia, France, Germany and China as the 5 top arms exporting nations.

  • For more than the last eight years, India was the largest arms importer in the international market.

RBI set to become 10th largest holder in gold

The Reserve Bank of India, which added 6.5 tonnes of gold to its reserves in January, taking its total holding forming part of its foreign exchange reserves to 607 tonnes, is set to become the tenth largest holder of the metal worldwide, displacing the Nerherlands.

  • According to data provided by the World Gold Council recently, India’s share of gold held globally has been rising steadily to stand at 6.2 per cent at the end of 2018 and has gone up further in January.

Rajasthan Royals sign BookMyShow as exclusive ticketing partner

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals announced a deal with BookMyShow for the upcoming season of the league. Tickets for Royal's home matches, which will be held at the Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur from March 25, will go on sale online from 12 March. 

  • The partnership marks a move to simplify the ticket purchasing process for fans across the globe.

C Lalsawta sworn in as the 1st Lokayukta of Mizoram

Retired IAS officer C Lalsawta was sworn-in as the first Chairman of the newly-constituted Lokayukta in Mizoram. He was sworn-in at the Raj Bhawan in Aizawl. State governor Jagdish Mukhi administered the oath of office to Lalsawta.

  • Lalsawta is a 1981 batch Bihar cadre IAS officer. He was the principal secretary of finance department in the state from 2008 to 2011.

Veteran Hindi Newsreader Vinod Kashyap passes away at 88

Veteran Hindi Newsreader Vinod Kashyap has passed away following a prolonged illness. She was 88. She served All India Radio for about 30 years. The veteran newsreader started her career in Radio as a drama artist.
