NATIONAL NEWS

Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees for 2021-2022 reconstituted
Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees for 2021-2022 has been reconstituted. The Standing Committees have been reconstituted with effect from 13th September.
  • Rajya Sabha member V. Vijayasai Reddy of YSR Congress has been appointed as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce. Rajya Sabha MP  of BJP has been appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports.
  • The Committee on Health and Family Welfare will be headed by Rajya Sabah MP Ram Gopal Yadav of Samajwadi Party. Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Anand Sharma has been appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Home Affairs while Lok Sabha member PC Gaddigoudar has been appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture.
  •  Lok Sabha MP Jual Oram has been appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Defence. Committee on External Affairs will be headed by Lok Sabha MP PP Chaudhary, while the Committee on Finance will be headed by Lok Sabha MP Jayant Sinha.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

136 countries sign landmark pact to enforce at least 15% corporate tax on large multinationals
A group of 136 countries have signed a landmark global treaty to enforce a corporate tax rate of at least 15% for large multinationals.
  • The deal marks a shift in tax policy because it not only imposes a minimum corporate tax rate, but it also forces companies to pay taxes where they operate - not just where they have their headquarters.
  • The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced this major breakthrough, after years of disagreement. The floor under corporate tax will come in from 2023.


BANKING & FINANCE

PNB launches "6S Campaign" under Govt. of India's customer outreach programme
With India celebrating 75 years of Independence, the Government of India has launched "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" for various outreach activities on financial services, with focal theme of 'Janta Se Jodna'.
  • In line with the above Government's initiative, Punjab National Bank, as the country's second largest Public Sector Bank, has launched a "6S Campaign" encapsulating different schemes such as - Swabhiman, Samruddhi, Sampark and Shikhar, Sankalp and Swagat.
  • The objective is to drive special awareness campaign for development of financial services in the country and to accelerate credit growth, improve penetration of social security schemes and drive digital banking push.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

FICCI projects 9.1% GDP growth for FY22
India's GDP is expected to grow at 9.1% in 2021-22 as economic recovery, post the second wave of the pandemic, seems to be holding ground, FICCI said.
  • FICCI's Economic Outlook Survey also noted that the ongoing festive season would support this momentum.
  • However, the industry body cautioned that a likely surge in people's movement during Deepavali can lead to a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases again.


APPOINTMENTS

Austria's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz steps down following corruption scandal
Austria's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has stepped down, after pressure triggered by a corruption scandal. Announcing this Mr Kurtz said that  mystery of the honey-trap video has shook Austria and what's required now is stability.
  • To resolve the impasse he has decided to step aside to prevent chaos, Mr Kurz said. He said he would remain leader of his party, and continue to sit in parliament.
  • He has proposed Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg as his replacement.
Guinea military government names Mohamed Beavogui as PM
Guinea’s military government has named Mohamed Beavogui, a former civil servant and expert in agricultural finance, as prime minister to preside over a promised transition back to democratic rule following last month’s coup.
  • The 68-year-old engineering graduate and son of a diplomat is an expert in agricultural development financing and risk management.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

In a first in India, Telangana develops smartphone-based e-voting app
The country’s first smartphone-based e-voting solution has been developed by the Telangana government and a dry run will be held in Khammam district soon.
  • The software helps some voters, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, those employed in notified essential services, polling personnel, and patients who can’t vote physically. Technical support for this project was provided by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC).
  • The development has also been guided by an expert committee comprising professor Rajat Moona, director of IIT-Bhilai and technical advisor to the Election Commission, and professors from IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi.
e-FIR service started in Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, common people will now be able to file e-FIR on the citizen portal sitting at home. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan started it by launching the Citizen Portal at a function organized on the occasion of 20 years of Public Welfarel and Suraj.
  • Optional facility to register FIR in the form of e-FIR has been provided to common citizens by Citizen Portal. With this, citizens can file an e-FIR in relation to the incident to the concerned Police Station online. E-FIR can be filed by citizens by registering themselves on the website of Madhya Pradesh Police or citizen portal citizen.mppolice.gov.in only by logging in with the registered ID.
  • With the launch of the Citizen Portal, the aggrieved person will be able to file a complaint online through e-FIR in cases of vehicle theft up to 15 lakh or general theft up to one lakh.


IMPORTANT DAYS

World Postal Day
World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 each year. This day is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) which was started in 1874 in Switzerland.
  • The theme of World Post Day 2021 is “Innovate to recover.” The purpose of World Post Day is to bring awareness to the post's role in the everyday lives of people and businesses.
Territorial Army celebrates its 72nd Raising Day
The Territorial Army celebrated its 72nd Raising Day on October 9,2021.
  • Initially, the Territorial Army consisted of Infantry, Armoured Corps, Air Defence Artillery, Signals, Supply and other departmental units. It was formally raised by the first Governor General C Rajagopalachari on 09 October 1949.
  • The Territorial Army has ten Ecological TA Battalions which are responsible for restoration of ecological environment of the country carrying out plantation in rugged and inhospitable terrain, reviving wetlands, restoring water bodies and undertaking water conservation measure by building check dams.
