India signs pact for social housing units in Maldives
EXIM Bank of India has concluded Agreements with Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation Limited (FDC) of Maldives to extend Buyers Credit of around $228 million for the construction of 4000 Social Housing Units in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
  • The construction will be undertaken by National Buildings Construction Company (NBCC) and JMC Projects (India) Ltd. The companies have rich experience in real estate developmentand civil construction projects, both in India and abroad.
Mumbai, Bangalore and London named among World's top startup hubs
London, Mumbai and Bangalore have featured among the world’s top startup hubs, according to a comprehensive ranking of international startup hubs compiled by Startup Genome for its annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2021.
  • Silicon Valley held onto the top spot this year while Beijing and Boston came in fourth and fifth respectively. Despite Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic, London maintained its second-place ranking tied with New York for the second year in a row.
  • Bangalore also ranked in the top 30 global tech hubs (#23 globally) and Delhi made it into the top 40 list, coming in at 36th. Mumbai maintained its first position in the Emerging Ecosystems ranking outperforming other fast-growing ecosystems in areas of funding, performance, marke research and talent.
India, UAE to sign trade pact by Mar 2022
India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have formally launched negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that aims at expanding bilateral trade and investment between the two nations.
  • The first round of CEPA negotiations held. Both nations aim to sign a deal in six months.
  • A new strategic economic agreement between both nations is expected to increase bilateral trade in goods to $100 billion within five years of the agreement being signed and increase trade in services to $15 billion.
Haryana gives nod for implementing Mukhyamantri Bagwani Bima Yojana
The Haryana Cabinet approved the implementation of the Mukhyamantri Bagwani Bima Yojana (MBBY), an assurance-based scheme to compensate crop losses due to adverse weather and natural calamities for farmers growing horticulture crops.
  • Under this scheme, farmers need to give only 2.5 per cent, that is Rs 750 for vegetable and spice crop and Rs 1000 for fruit crops against a sum assured of Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively.
  • The scheme will be optional. A seed capital of Rs 10 crore will be kept by the state government for the scheme.

Accra named UNESCO World Book Capital 2023
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has named Accra (Ghana) as UNESCO World Book Capital for 2023, following the evaluation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.
  • After Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2022, the city of Accra was selected for its strong focus on young people and their potential to contribute to the culture and wealth of Ghana.
  • Accra’s proposed programme seeks to use the power of books to engage these young people, as an effective way of skilling up the next generation.

Bank Deposits Grow By 11.90% In FY21 Says RBI
Bank deposits grew by 11.9 per cent on a year-on-year basis during the financial year 2020-21  compared to 8.8 per cent in the previous year on the back of high growth in current account and savings account (CASA) deposits, the RBI data showed.
  • Also, the share of CASA deposits increased to 43.7 per cent in March 2021  from 41.7 per cent a year ago, the RBI said. Among institutional categories, the household sector held 64.1 per cent share in total deposits, the central bank said.
  • Individuals were the major constituent of the household sector and contributed 55.8 per cent in aggregate deposits. Bank deposits of non-financial corporations surged by 18.8 percent during 2020-21 and their share in total deposits increased to 16.2 percent in March-2021, the RBI said.
  • Among the stated, Maharashtra, UP and Karnataka held one-third of total household sectors’ outstanding deposits and over 40 per cent of its incremental deposits during 2020-21, the RBI said.

NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station located in the Himalayan State of Sikkim has been conferred with the prestigious Blue Planet Prize by International Hydropower Association (IHA), a London based non-profit membership association operating in 120 countries.
  • The award for Teesta-V Power Station was announced during the World Hydropower Congress, 2021.
  • The award had been conferred to Teesta-V Power Station based on its sustainability assessment undertaken by a team of accredited lead assessors of IHA in 2019 using the Operation Stage tool of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) of IHA.

Assam to set up a tea Park at Kamrup district's Chhaygaon
Assam is setting up a tea Park at Chayygaon in Kamrup District.
  •  This tea garden will have rail and port connectivity, cargo and warehouse amenities, processing facilities like tea grinding, blending, packaging and other utility services under one roof.
Uttar Pradesh govt to set up electronic park in 250 acres near Jewar Airport The Uttar Pradesh government will set up an electronic park in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) area that is expected to attract an investment of ₹50,000 crore, according to Yeida CEO Arun Veer Singh.
  •  The official said that the growing interest in Uttar Pradesh among electronic industry giants due to “investor-friendly” policies has prompted the government to develop the Electronic Park.
  • The Park is likely to be developed in an area of 250 acres either in Sector 14, or Sector 10 of Yeida near Jewar Airport.

Centre notifies Production Linked Incentive Scheme for automobile & auto components
The Centre has notified Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for automobile and auto components.
  • The scheme will be implemented over a period of five years starting from financial year 2022 to 2023.
  • It is estimated that the scheme will help create additional employment of over 7.5 lakh jobs in the auto sector.It will also attract fresh investments of over 42 thousand 500 crore rupees in five years.
Over two crore 82 lakh households electrified across country so far under Saubhagya scheme
Government said that two crore 82 lakh households have been electrified so far under the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – Saubhagya.
  • The scheme has completed four years since its inception. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched this scheme on this day in 2017 to ensure electrification of all willing households in the country in rural as well as urban areas.
Finance Ministry approves capital expenditure projects worth over Rs 2, 903 crore in eight states to give timely stimulus to economic recovery
Finance Ministry has approved capital expenditure projects worth over two thousand 903 crore rupees in eight States. The capital will be provided to states under the scheme Special Assistance to States for Capital Expenditure for 2021-22 to give timely stimulus to economic recovery.
  • The Ministry has released over one thousand 393 crore rupees to States, namely, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sikkim and Telangana.

Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto's first statue was unveiledin a business park near the Danube river in Budapest, Hungary.
  • The bust of the bronze statue is placed on top of the engraved stone plinth, bearing the name of Satoshi Nakamoto, whose true identity is hitherto unknown.
  • Although the legendary creator's identity is still a mystery to the world, the bronze statue acknowledges the immense contribution to the disruption of traditional currency.
International Astronomical Union names crater on the Moon's South Pole  after Matthew Henson
The International Astronomical Union has named a crater on the South Pole of the Moon after Matthew Henson, a Black man who became one of the first people to stand on top of the world.
  • Located in the Moon’s South Pole between Sverdrup and de Gerlache craters, the Henson Crater is in the same region where the Artemis program by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) aims to land the next generation of lunar explorers.
  • The explorers will be selected from the space agency’s increasingly diverse astronaut pool.

The Telangana Government has entered into an agreement with Wingsure, an insurtech venture spin-out of SRI International.
  • As a part of the agreement, Wingsure will provide deep-tech-based personalised crop insurance products and advisory services to small, underserved farmers in the State.
  • The alliance is among the first in the global farming ecosystem and will help Telangana to promote social inclusion and digital transformation in Indian agriculture.

India signs contract for acquisition of 56 C-295MW transport aircraft
India has signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space Company of Spain for acquisition of 56 C-295MW transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force. Defence Ministry signed the contract with Airbus Defence and Space. It also signed an Offset Contract with Airbus Defence and Space.
  • The induction of C-295MW will be a significant step towards modernisation of the transport fleet of the Indian Air Force. 56 C-295MW transport aircraft is supported by latest technology which will replace the ageing Avro transport aircraft of IAF.
  • The aircraft will give a major boost to tactical airlift capability of IAF, especially in the Northern and North-Eastern sector and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
India will become 3rd largest importer by 2050: UK report
  India could become the world’s third-largest importer by 2050, according to a report released by the UK’s Department of International Trade. With a 5.9 per cent share of global imports by 2050, the country will become the third-largest importer, following China and the United States.
  • At present, India occupies the eighth spot on the list of the largest importing countries with a 2.8 per cent share. As per the Global Trade Outlook report, the country’s position on the list will jump to the fourth position by 2030 with a 3.9 per cent share.
  • The report suggests that there will be a change in import trends in fur as the US and European Union’s share of imports is expected to decline, while Asia will see its share of global imports rise.
  • However, China is expected to completely overtake the US as the world’s largest economy in 2030. “The overtake is expected to happen around 2030.

India's first official frameSAFAR: India's First Framework for Air Quality Forecast Gets Global Nod India's first officwork for air quality forecast, SAFAR, has been accepted internationally with peer-reviewed Elsevier Journal publishing its findings, founder project director Dr Gufran Beig said.
  • The framework, mandated under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and developed under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is being used to make air quality forecasts in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad.
  • The findings of the framework incorporated in a research paper — India's maiden air quality forecasting framework for megacities of divergent environments.
  • The research revealed that transport is the most dominating source of PM2.5 emissions. It accounts for 41 percent of PM2.5 pollution in Delhi, 40 percent in Pune, 35 percent in Ahmedabad and 31 percent in Mumbai. The share of biofuel emissions is highest in Mumbai (15.5 percent), followed by Pune (11.4 percent), Ahmedabad (10.2 percent) and Delhi (3 percent).

Federal Bank announced a tie-up with OneCard for a mobile-first credit card that targets the country’s young, tech-savvy population.
  • It will target young working professionals aged 23-35, primarily representing the millennials and Gen Z.
  • The mobile-first credit card offers in-app on-boarding, whereby the virtual card can be activated and used instantly, while the metal card is delivered to the customer in three to five days. The cards will be powered by Visa.

  • Determined by the actions of more than 76 million professionals in India on the platform, the annual LinkedIn Top Startups list reveals 25 young, emerging companies where India wants to work now.
  • Unacademy took the pole position on the list, with its valuation soaring to USD 3.44 billion as the platform explored new learning paths for upskilling, hiring, and creator-led courses.
  • With these top three unicorns, and nearly 60 per cent of the 2021 LinkedIn Top Startups India List based out of Bengaluru, the city has reinforced its reputation as the “Silicon Valley of India". Others in the top 10 include upGrad (4th), Razorpay (5th), Meesho (6th), Skyroot Aerospace (7th), boAt (8th), Urban Company (9th) and Agnikul Cosmos (10th).

Zee to merge with Sony; Punit Goenka will be CEO & MD of combined entity
Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) announced that its board of directors at a meeting held, unanimously provided an in-principle approval for the merger with Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI). Shares of Zee surged more than 20% on the BSE in trade post the deal announcement.
  • As part of the transaction, Punit Goenka will continue to be the Managing Director and CEO of the merged entity.

  • Meanwhile, Rohit Mor stunned defending champion Mohammad Hussamuddin to win the gold in the 57kg category.
  • All the winners of the national boxing championships will qualify for the world championships, which will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from October 24 to November 6.
  • Deepak Kumar (51kg), Akash (54kg), Akash (67), Sumit (75kg), Sachin Kumar (80kg), Lakshya (86kg) and Narender (+92kg) also secured gold medals by winning their respective final bouts at the Inspire Institute of Sports. All of them are from Services team.

RN Ravi resigns as Naga peace talks interlocutor
R N Ravi resigned as the Centre’s interlocutor for Naga peace talks after serving in the post for several years, during which he negotiated with key insurgent groups for signing of the Naga Peace Accord.
  • Ravi’s resignation comes days after he was moved out of Nagaland where he also held the post of governor. On September 9, government appointed him as Tamil Nadu Governor after two years of gubernatorial service in Nagaland.
Air India CMD Rajiv Bansal appointed as aviation secretary, K Rajaraman telecom secy
Air India CMD Rajiv Bansal has been appointed as Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Bansal will replace the current Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola, who retires on 30 September.
  • K Rajaraman, Additional Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, has been appointed as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications. Rajaraman will take over the charge from Anshu Prakash who is due to superannuate on September 30.
  • The Centre carried out a major top-level bureaucratic reshuffle. As per of the reshuffle, Steel Secretary Pradip Kumar Tripathi has been appointed as the Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
  • Govind Mohan, Additional Secretary in the Department of Home, will be Secretary, Ministry of Culture.
  • Anurag Jain, Vice Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority, has been appointed as the Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • K Sanjay Murthy, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited, will be Secretary, Department of Higher Education. Murthy, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, will take over the charge from Amit Khare, who retires on September 30.
  • Devendra Kumar Singh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises will be Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation.

Former Commissioner of Delhi Police, Yudhvir Singh Dadwal, has passed away here at his residence in Chhattarpur. He was 70.
  • Dadwal, an Indian Police Service officer of the 1974-batch, served as the 16th police commissioner of Delhi from July 2007 to November 2010. Notably, the Commonwealth Games were held in Delhi during his tenure.
Former AIR Newsreader Ramanuj Prasad Singh passes away
Former Hindi Newsreader of All India Radio Ramanuj Prasad Singh passed away in Gurugram. He was 86.
  • Mr Singh’s deep voice and relaxed style of reading endeared him to All India Radio listeners from the beginning. He served AIR for 3 decades and became a well-known name among the common people for his news reading for years.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia launched a unique project titled "Mobile Music Bus", a mobile music classroom and recording studio.
  • The Delhi government claimed that it is India's first 'Mobile Music Bus', and aims to train children through a media-based curriculum, including audio production and film production, to help them build sustainable careers in these fields.
Odisha ropes in Unicef, CPR for sanitation facilities in villages around urban areas
The Odisha government roped in Unicef and Centre for Policy Research (CPR) for urban-rural convergence on Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) and Plastic Waste Management (PWM).
  • A Letter of Understanding (LoU) was signed between the departments of Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) and the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water (PR&DW) and Unicef and CPR.
  • The initiative aimed at strengthening the efforts of both departments to ensure district-wide FSSM and PWM through urban-rural convergence will be piloted in seven districts in the first phase.

  • Commercial banks have been finding it unviable to set up owned branches at remote locations and smaller centres, but with PayPoint India's proven expertise in taking financial and payment products to the remotest locations through its vast and ever-expanding distribution network.
  • Almost all essential banking services can be delivered through BC customer service points.

Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have launched an international co-branded RuPay NCMC Platinum contactless debit card.
  • This personalised RuPay platinum international debit card comes with various benefits including 5 per cent cashback up to ₹50 on the first 2 transactions at BPCL outlets.
  • The customers will also receive 0.75 per cent cashback incentive on fuel transactions up to maximum ₹45 per transaction at over 19,000 plus BPCL outlets across India.
India Post Payments Bank ties up with Tata AIG and Bajaj Allianz for Non-Life Insurance Products
India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) announced a strategic alliance with Tata AIG General Insurance Co. Ltd. for distribution of non-life insurance products across the country.
  • As part of the alliance, IPPB will strive to make available affordable insurance products through its robust network of 650 branches and over 136,000 banking access points to citizens at large.
  • The scope of products shall include health insurance products, personal accident, motor insurance amongst other innovative tailor made products to address the protection needs of Bharat.

BUSINESS & ECONOMY

ADB cuts India growth forecast to 10%, sees faster inflation at 5.5%
The Asian Development Bank has cut its forecast for India’s GDP growth in 2021-22 to 10%, from 11% projected earlier, with downside risks dominating the economic outlook.
  • The ADB also sees rising input costs fuelling inflation to a faster 5.5% pace, than the 5.2% previously estimated.
  • While the COVID-19 second wave has disrupted the economic recovery since the ADB’s April forecast for 11% growth, the Bank expects the economy to ‘rebound strongly in the remaining three quarters and grow by 10% in the full fiscal year before moderating to 7.5%’ in 2022-23.
OECD trims India's economic growth forecast to 9.7% for FY22
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) cut its projection of India's economic growth by 0.2 percentage points to 9.7 per cent for the current financial year.
  • The economy was projected by the grouping of advanced nations to grow by 7.9 per cent next financial year, 0.3 percentage point slower than pegged by it earlier.
  • If the projections come out to be correct, India's economy would be the fastest growing large economy in both these years. It would be followed by China at 8.5 per cent in 2021 and Spain at 6.6 per cent in 2022. China is pegged to be slowing down to 5.8 per cent in the next calendar year.
TRIFED and Big Basket enter into MoU for promotion and sale
The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) and e-grocery platform Big Basket, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the promotion and sale of natural Van Dhan products being made available to Big Basket from Van Dhan production units.
  • With this, Big Basket will be able to enrich its portfolio through the of hand-made authentic forest products sourced by the tribal population.

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is poised to win a third term in a snap election but fall short of regaining the parliamentary majority he was seeking.
  • Trudeau, in power since 2015 and governing with a minority of House of Commons seats since 2019, decided to gamble on an early vote and capitalize on his government’s handling of the pandemic, which included massive spending to support individuals and businesses and a push for high vaccination rates.
  • Trudeau’s Liberals were leading or elected in 157 seats exactly the same number they won in 2019, 13 short of the 170 needed for a majority in the House of Commons.
Govt extends Uday Kotak’s term at IL&FS for another 6 months
The government extended the term of Uday Kotak as non-executive chairman of debt-ridden IL&FS group by another six months.
  • The government through a gazette notification extended the term of Kotak, who is also the MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, till April 2, 2022.

Niti Aayog Launches New Initiative to Promote Zero-Pollution Delivery Freight Vehicles
Government think tank Niti Aayog and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) launched an initiative to promote zero-pollution delivery vehicles by working with consumers and industry.
  • The campaign, Shoonya, aims to accelerate adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the urban deliveries segment and create consumer awareness about the benefits of zero-pollution delivery.
  • Initially, close to 30 companies including Mahindra Electric, Tata Motors, Zomato, Ashok Leyland, Sun Mobility, Lightning Logistics, Big Basket, Bluedart, Hero Electric, and Swiggy among others attended the kick-off meeting chaired by Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya releases FSSAI’s 3rd State Food Safety Index
In an effort to galvanize States to work towards ensuring safe food for citizens, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya released Food Safety and Standards Authority of India FSSAI’s 3rd State Food Safety Index to measure the performance of States across five parameters of food safety
  • This year, among the larger states, Gujarat was the top ranking state, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Among the smaller states, Goa stood first followed by Meghalaya and Manipur. Among UTs, Jammu and Kashmir, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and New Delhi secured top ranks.
  • On the occasion, Mr Mandaviya flagged off 19 Mobile Food Testing Vans Food Safety on Wheels to supplement the food safety ecosystem across the country taking the total number of such mobile testing vans to 109.
  • The Minister also released the results of PAN-India survey for identifying the presence of industrially produced trans fatty acid content in the selected foods. Mr Mandaviya also launched various innovative initiatives by FSSAI including the Eat Right Research Awards and Grants to encourage and recognize high-quality research in the area of food safety and nutrition in India, a logo for Vegan Foods for easy identification and distinction from non-vegan foods for empowering consumers to make informed food choices. He also released various e-books that advocate and capture recipes around local seasonal food items, indigenous millets and plant-based sources of protein.
Ministry of Education forms National Steering Committee for development of National Curriculum Frameworks Ministry of Education formed the National Steering Committee for the development of National Curriculum Frameworks.
  • The committee will be chaired by former Chairman of ISRO Dr K Kasturirangan. Chancellor of National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration Mahesh Chandra Pant, Chairman of National Book Trust Govind Prasad Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia University Najma Akhtar, First Vice-Chancellor of Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh T V Kattimani, guest professor at IIT Gandhinagar and Indian author of French origin Michel Danino and American mathematician of Indian origin Manjul Bhargava are part of the 12 member committee.
  • The Committee will discuss different aspects of School Education, Early Childhood Care and Education, Teacher Education and Adult Education keeping in focus all the recommendations of NEP 2020 related to these four areas for proposing curriculum reforms.

Indian, Indonesian navies take part in maritime exercise ‘Samudra Shakti’
The Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy are taking part in a bilateral maritime exercise, known as 'Samudra Shakti'. The two-day exercise is being held near to Sunda Strait from 20 to 22 September.
  • This is the third edition of Samudra Shakti, which aims to strengthen maritime cooperation between the two navies and bolster friendship bonds across the Indo Pacific.
  • The Indian Navy’s multi-role guided missile stealth frigate INS Shivalik and anti-submarine corvette INS Kadmatt are representing the service in the exercise.

Air Marshal V R Chaudhari appointed as next Chief of IAF
The government appointed Vice Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari as the next Chief of the Air Staff (CAS). The current CAS, Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria, is set to retire on September 30.
  • Air Marshal Chaudhari was commissioned in the fighter stream of the Air Force on December 29, 1982. He has flying experience of more than 3800 hrs on a wide variety of fighter and trainer aircraft, including missions flown during Op-Meghdoot and Op-Safed Sagar.
Manika Sheokand appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for Water Conservation Campaign by the Haryana government
VLCC Femina Miss Grand India 2020 Manika Sheokand was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador of the Water Conservation Campaign for the Haryana Government.
  • Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar handed over appointment letter and an agreement to Manika at a programme organised at Haryana Niwas.
Facebook India Appoints Former IAS Officer Rajiv Aggarwal As Head Of Public Policy
Facebook India said it has appointed ex-IAS officer and former Uber executive Rajiv Aggarwal as the Director of Public Policy.
  • He succeeds Ankhi Das, who quit in October last year. She was embroiled in a controversy for opposing enforcement of hate-speech rules against right-wing leaders in the country.
  • Aggarwal, in this role, will define and lead important policy development initiatives for Facebook in India on an agenda that covers user safety, data protection and privacy, inclusion and internet governance.
Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown appointed WHO Ambassador for Global Health Financing
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the appointment of Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as its ambassador for Global Health Financing.
  • Brown, according to the WHO, has played an instrumental role in trying to get rich countries as well as the private sector to ensure equitable distribution of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines.

CISF Official Geeta Samota Becomes 'Fastest Indian' to Summit Two Peaks
CISF official Geeta Samota successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. With this, the 31-year-old became the “fastest Indian” to summit two peaks located in Africa and Russia.
  • She has also scaled Mt Satopanth (7075 metres; located in Uttarakhand) and Mt Lobuche (in Nepal). She was also a team member of the Mt Everest expedition team of the CAPF.
  • Apart from Geeta Samota, CISF official Seerapu Srikant also successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro.
Veerappa Moily, Arundhathi Subramaniam, Other Winners Receive Sahitya Akademi Award
Politician-writer M Veerappa Moily and poet Arundhathi Subramaniam were among the 20 authors who received the Sahitya Akademi Award for 2020 at a ceremony. The award, which includes a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl and an amount of Rs 1,00,000, was presented at the award presentation function.
  • While Moily received the prestigious award for his epic poetry 'Sri Bahubali Ahimsadigvijayam' in Kannada, Subramaniam won the award for her poetry collection, "When God is a Traveller", in English.
  • The other winners in poetry include Harish Meenakshi (Gujarati), Anamika (Hindi), RS Bhaskar (Konkani), Irungbam Deven (Manipuri), Rupchand Hansda (Santali), and Nikhileswar (Telugu). Nanda Khare (Marathi), Maheshchandra Sharma Gautam (Sanskrit), Imaiyam (Tamil) and Sri Hussain-ul-Haque bagged the award for their novels.
  • Apurba Kumar Saikia (Assamese), (late) Dharanidhar Owari (Bodo), (late) Hiday Koul Bharti (Kashmiri), Kamalkant Jha (Maithili) and Gurdev Singh Rupana (Punjabi) have received the award for short stories.
  •  The Akademi has named Gian Singh (Dogri) and Jetho Lalwani (Sindhi) the winners for their plays, while Mani Shankar Mukhopadhyay, popularly known as Shankar received the award for memoir (Bengali).
PM Sheikh Hasina conferred award for Bangladesh’s steady progress in achieving UN SDGs
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been conferred with SDG Progress award for Bangladesh’s steady progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the  UN sponsored Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
  • Prime Minister Hasina is currently visiting the US to attend the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen called this award an international acknowledgement of Bangladesh’s success in spearheading the SDGs.
India now has 10 International Blue Flag beaches
Two more beaches in India have been awarded “Blue Flag” certification, an international eco-level tag, taking the total number of such beaches in the country to 10, the Environment Ministry said.
  • The two beaches to receive the certification this year are Kovalam in Tamil Nadu and Eden in Puducherry.
  • Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised eco-label accorded on the basis of 33 stringent criteria in four major heads which are environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environmental management and conservation and safety and services in the beaches.
President Kovind confers National Florence Nightingale Award 2020
President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the National Florence Nightingale Award 2020 to Deputy Director General of Military Nursing Service Brig S V Saraswati. 
  • Brig Saraswati as a renowned operation theatre nurse, has assisted in more than 3,000 lifesaving and emergency surgeries and has trained residents, operation room nursing trainees and auxiliary staff in her career.

Former England Footballer Jimmy Greaves passes away
Jimmy Greaves, one of England’s most prolific strikers and Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer, passed away. He was 81.
  • He scored 44 goals in 57 games for England and was a member of the 1966 World Cup-winning squad.
  • He holds the record for most goals in the English top flight with 357, and scored 266 in 379 matches for Tottenham.
Mizoram U-19 Head Coach And Former Bengal Spinner Murtaza Lodhgar passes away
Former Bengal left-arm spinner and Mizoram U-19 head coach Murtaza Lodhgar died of cardiac arrest. He was 45.
  • Lodhgar was in the port city with the Mizoram colts, who were set to play the league phase of Vinoo Mankad Trophy (U-19 National one-dayers) as BCCI’s domestic season is set to commence.
