Finance Ministry releases monthly Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant of Rs 9,871 cr to 17 States
Ministry of Finance has released the monthly Post Devolution Revenue Deficit (PDRD) Grant of 9,871 crore rupees to 17 States. This was the 11th instalment of the PDRD grant released to the States.
  • The Fifteenth Finance Commission has recommended a total Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant of one lakh 18 thousand 452 crore rupees to 17 States in the financial year 2021-22. The Ministry said, an amount of over one lakh 8 thousand crore rupees has been released to the eligible States so far.
PM Modi unveils 'Statue of Equality' in Hyderabad, commemorating Bhakti Saint Ramanujacharya
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 216-foot tall 'Statue of Equality', commemorating Sri Ramanujacharya who promoted the idea of equality in all aspects of living, and drove home the 11th century Bhakti saint's message of equality of all.
  • The 216-feet tall Statue is made of ‘panchaloha’, a combination of five metals gold, silver, copper, brass, and zinc and is among one of the tallest metallic statues in sitting position, in the world.
  • It is mounted on a 54-ft high base building, named ‘Bhadra Vedi’, has floors devoted for a Vedic digital library and research center, ancient Indian texts, a theatre, an educational gallery detailing many works of Sri Ramanujacharya.
Sports Ministry Releases Financial Help of INR 2.54 Crore Under 'Deendayal Upadhyay Welfare Fund' for Sportspersons
The Sports Ministry has released financial assistance to the tune of Rs 2.54 crore (2,54,03,910) for athletes and coaches during the period April 2020 till January 2022 under the ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons’ (PDUNWFS).
  • The scheme provides for grant of suitable financial assistance to outstanding sportspersons now living in indigent condition, medical treatment, procurement of sports equipments, participation in national and international events etc.
Govt decides to continue the Scheme of Rashtriya Yuva Sashaktikaran Karyakram for another 5 years
The Central Government has decided to continue the Scheme of “Rashtriya Yuva Sashaktikaran Karyakram, RYSK for another five years from 2021 -22 to 2025-26 with an outlay of over 2,710 crore rupees. 
  • The decision was taken with a view to achieving the objectives of developing the personality and leadership qualities of the youth and to engage them in nation building activities.
  • Government of India also decided to continue the NSS(National Service Scheme) over the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (2021-22 to 2025-26) at an outlay of Rs. 1,627 Crore.NSS is implemented in Senior Secondary Schools, Colleges and Universities in all States and UTs across the country.

Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has felicitated the Beating Retreat Drone Light Show - StartUps who had mesmerized the nation by lighting the sky with colourful tricolor at New Delhi's Vijay Chowk.
  • Dr Singh said, rules and regulations are being simplified in the Department of Science and Technology for accessing liberal funding by innovative Start-ups.

Sebi overhauls high-power advisory committee on settlement orders
Capital markets regulator Sebi has restructured its four-member high-powered advisory committee on settlement orders and compounding of offenses.
  • According to a recent update with the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the committee will now be headed by Jai Narayan Patel, former chief justice of Calcutta High Court.
  • Sebi has added two new members to its committee: M S Sahoo, former chairperson of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India, and Poornima Advani, former chairperson of the National Commission for Women.
  • P K Malhotra, a former law secretary in the Ministry of Law & Justice of India, will remain on the committee.
India's unemployment rate drops to 6.57% in Jan, lowest since March 2021: CMIE
India's unemployment rate witnessed a sharp decline to 6.57 per cent in January, the lowest since March 2021, as the country gradually recovers with easing of restrictions following a decline in Omicron cases, according to CMIE.
  • While unemployment in urban India stood at 8.16 per cent in January, in rural areas it was the lowest at 5.84 per cent, as per data by independent think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
  • In December, the unemployment rate stood at 7.91 per cent, with urban at 9.30 per cent and rural at 7.28 per cent, it added.

Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian and Samayara Panwar Win at Iran Junior International
Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian and Samayara Panwar secured the Under-19 boys and girls’ singles titles respectively at the Iran Junior International Series badminton tournament.
  • While top seed Subramanian got the better of Ali Hayati of Iran 21-17 21-17 in the boys’ singles final, Panwar defeated another Iranian, Ferdous Foroughi 21-14 21-15 in girls’ singles summit clash.

IndiGo appoints Co-founder Rahul Bhatia as Managing Director
InterGlobe Aviation-run IndiGo has appointed its co-founder and promoter Rahul Bhatia as the company's managing director with immediate effect.
  • Bhatia is the Co-founder and Promoter of InterGlobe Aviation.He would oversee all aspects of the airline, and actively lead the management team.
Senior scientist GA Srinivasa Murthy appointed director of DRDL Hyderabad
GA Srinivasa Murthy has been appointed director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Hyderabad.
  • He joined DRDL in the year 1987 and made significant contributions in the area of structural dynamics, ground resonance testing, electrical integration and checkout for various projects of the missile complex.
  • He is renowned for his contributions towards the Advanced Naval Systems Programme (ANSP).
JNU Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar appointed as Chairman of UGC
Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University Jagadesh Kumar has been appointed as the Chairman of University Grants Commission UGC.
  • Mr Kumar has been appointed for a period of five years from the date of his assumption of charge of the post or until he attains the age of 65.
Sonali Singh given charge of Controller General of Accounts
The centre has given the charge the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance to Sonali Singh, Additional Controller General of Accounts, after superannuation of Dipak Dash. 
  • A 1987 batch officer of Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS), Singh had joined CGA as Additional Controller General of Accounts in October 2019. Prior to that, she had also served as Additional Secretary at Central Vigilance Commission.

UP's tableau adjudged the best at Republic Day parade this year
Uttar Pradesh has been selected as the best state tableau among 12 States and UTs which participated in the Republic Day parade 2022. The tableau of Uttar Pradesh was based on the theme ‘One District One Product and Kashi Vishwanath Dham. The second place went to Karnataka for its tableau based on Cradle of Traditional Handicrafts. The third position went to Meghalaya for its tableau on Meghalaya’s 50 years of Statehood and its tribute to women-led cooperative societies and Self Help Groups.
  • Central Industrial Security Force has been named the best marching contingent among Central Armed Police Force and other auxiliary forces. The tableaux of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Civil Aviation have been declared as joint winners in the category of Central Ministries and Departments. The theme of the tableau of Education Ministry was National Education Policy, while the tableau of Civil Aviation Ministry was based on the theme Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik.
  • Among the three services, the Indian Navy marching contingent has been adjudged as the best marching contingent. However, In popular choice category, the marching contingent of the Indian Air Force has been picked as the best marching contingent among the three Services. Maharashtra was voted as the best Tableau among the States and UTs in the popular choice category.
NHRC selects Telugu short film ‘Street Student’ as winner of its seventh Short Film Award Competition
A Telugu short film depicting the story of a street urchin with a strong message on right to education has bagged the first prize in a competition organised by the National Human Rights Comments (NHRC), the rights body said.
  • 'Street Student' by Akula Sandeep has been selected for the first prize worth Rs 2 lakh in the seventh Short Film Award Competition. It is in Telugu with subtitles in English.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

ISRO to launch Chandrayan-3 in August this year
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will make its third venture to the Moon through the Chandrayaan-3 mission in August this year. This was stated by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
  • This year is expected to be quite busy for ISRO as major projects such as Gaganyaan and Aditya solar mission are also in the pipeline. ISRO will conduct 19 missions till December this year.


OBITUARIES

Veteran CPI(M) Leader & Former Tripura Assembly Speaker R C Debnath passes away 
Veteran CPI(M) leader and former Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly Ramendra Chandra Debnath died of kidney failure in Kolkata. He was 66.
  • Debnath is the sitting MLA of Yubarajnagar assembly constituency. He won the seat for the first time in 1993 and won it for six times.
  • He was the Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assmbly for three terms.
Veteran actor and Producer Ramesh Deo passes away
Bollywood veteran actor Ramesh Deo passed away after suffering a heart attack. He was 93.
  • Deo appeared in around 285 Hindi films and 190 Marathi films. 'Anand', 'Sanjog', 'Aapki Kasam', 'Mere Apne', 'Mr. India', 'Khilona', 'Jolly LLB', and 'Hulchul' are just a few of his major hits.

The book titled ‘India, That is Bharat: Coloniality, Civilisation, Constitution’ authored by J Sai Deepak has been released recently.
  • A Trilogy book series was published by Bloomsbury India. The 1st part was released on 15th August 2021, is set to launch the 2nd part in June 2022. Whereas, the 3rd and last parts will be released in June 2023.
