Jharkhand clinches 1st rank for implementing Smart City Mission schemesJharkhand has clinched the first position in the recent ranking released by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, based on the progress of the implementation of the Smart City Mission's schemes running in different 100 cities of the Country's 36 states and union territories.Rajasthan came second in the rankings.
- At the same time, Jharkhand's Capital Ranchi has risen to 12th position in terms of progress of the ongoing mission plans in 100 cities. On the other hand, Delhi is at number 11 in the list of States and Union Territories and Bihar at number 27 and New Delhi Municipal Corporation is at number 41 and Bihar Capital Patna at 68th position in the list of cities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a Rs. 1000 crore relief package for the cyclone hit areas of Gujarat.
- According to sources, this package has been given for the rehabilitation work in the areas devastated by the extremely severe cyclonic storm.
- Prime Minister Modi also announced ex-gratia cash compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the next of the kin of those who lost their lives due to Cyclone Tauktae in all the affected States.Mr. Modi said that Rs. 50,000 would be given to injured persons affected by cyclonic storm.
Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has urged the States and Union Territories to make fungal infection Mucormycosis known as black fungus, a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897.
- The Ministry has asked all the government and private health facilities, medical colleges to follow guidelines for screening, diagnosis, management of Mucormycosis issued by the Union Health Ministry and Indian Council of Medical Research.

India and Oman renew MoU on military cooperation along with its annexure as well as on maritime issuesIndia and Oman renewed the Memoranda of Understanding, MoUs on military cooperation along with its annexure as well as on maritime issues.
- The signing ceremony of MoU on military cooperation was held at the Ministry of Defense, Muscat. The document was signed by Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense, Oman Dr Mohammed bin Nasser Al Zaabi and Ambassador of India to Oman Munu Mahawar.

Govt extends due date of furnishing of IT Returns for AY 2021-22The government has extended the due date of furnishing of Income Tax Returns for the Assessment Year 2021-22, for individuals by two months from 31st July to 30th September, 2021.
- The government has also extended the due date of Income Tax Returns filing for companies for Assessment Year 2021-2022 from 31st October to 30th November.
- In addition to it, the due date of furnishing of belated or revised Return of Income for the Assessment Year 2021-22, which is 31st December has been extended to 31st January, 2022.
- The due date of furnishing of Report of Audit for the Previous Year 2020-21 was extended to 31st October this year from 30th September.
NSE Academy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange, has joined hands with Bharathiar University in Tamil Nadu for creating a Centre of Excellence for capital markets. The two entities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard, NSE said in a statement.
- This Centre of Excellence is crafted to prepare the faculty of Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges to enhance their knowledge in the domain of financial services.
- NSE Academy will work closely with Bharathiar University to provide the industry-ready curriculum which has been designed by industry experts.

Germany's World Cup winner midfielder Sami Khedira announces retirementGermany’s World Cup-winning midfielder Sami Khedira said he will retire following his club Hertha Berlin’s final match of the Bundesliga season against Hoffenheim.
- Khedira, 34, began his career at VfB Stuttgart and helped them win the league title in the 2006-07 season before moving to Real Madrid, where he won the league and Champions League in a trophy-laden spell.
- Khedira went on to win five Serie A titles at Juventus after joining them in 2015 and he played 77 games for Germany scoring seven goals and helped them win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Martha Koome appointed Kenya's first woman chief justiceKenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Court of Appeal Judge Martha Koome as the East African country's first woman chief justice and head of the judiciary.
- She replaces David Maraga, who made history by leading the Supreme Court when it annulled Kenyatta's 2017 re-election victory citing "illegalities and irregularities" and ordering a fresh election.
- Koome, 61, has had a distinguished career with over 33 years in private legal practice and as a member of the judiciary.
The LDF government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assumed office for its second consecutive term after Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administered the oath of office to Vijayan and his 20 cabinet colleagues at an event at the central stadium.
- Vijayan, who is the first Chief Minister in Kerala to get a second consecutive mandate, began his second innings with 17 new faces in the 21-member cabinet — eight ministers are first-time legislators. The Cabinet has three women members now.
An Indian-origin Human Sciences student from Magdalen College at the University of Oxford has been declared the winner at the end of a Student Union (SU) byelection.
- Anvee Bhutani, Co-Chair Campaign for Racial Awareness and Equality (CRAE) at Oxford SU and President of the Oxford India Society, was in the fray for the byelection for the 2021-22 academic year, which attracted a record turnout.
- According to the ‘Cherwell' student newspaper, Bhutani had used her manifesto to detail priorities of campaigning for the implementation of the Oxford living wage, delinking welfare services and disciplinary action, and diversifying the curriculum.

Six Indian places added to tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage SitesSix Indian sites, including the temples of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, the Ganga ghats in Varanasi, and the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, have been added to the tentative list of UNESCO’s world heritage sites, the Ministry of Culture, recently announced.
- The submissions were made by Archaeological Survey of India, which is responsible for the conservation and preservation of Indian monuments.
- The six sites are namely Satpura Tiger Reserve, Iconic riverfront of the historic city of Varanasi, Megalithic site of Hire Benkal, Maratha Military Architecture in Maharashtra, Bhedaghat-Lametaghat in Narmada Valley- Jabalpur, and temples of Kanchipuram.
- With the addition of these six sites, UNESCO has 48 proposals in the tentative list of India.

National Gallery of Modern Art launches Audio-Visual Guide App on International Museum DayNational Gallery of Modern Art, NGMA launched an Audio-Visual Guide App on the occasion of International Museum Day.
- The Culture Ministry said, now it will be possible for museum viewers to listen to anecdotes and stories related to the treasured Indian modern art exhibited at the Gallery, on their smartphone.
- The app is an audio-visual guide for exploring the modern art treasures on display across galleries of the Museum.
Countrywide Ayush COVID-19 counselling helpline has been operationalised. The toll-free number is 14443.
- The helpline is operational pan-India from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight-all seven days of a week.
- Through the helpline 14443, experts from different streams of Ayush, namely Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani and Siddha would be available to address queries of the general masses.
Indian Navy’s first destroyer INS Rajput was decommissioned at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam after serving the nation for 41 glorious years.
- The ship was decommissioned in a solemn and low key event due to the ongoing COVID Pandemic when the National Flag, Naval Ensign, and the Decommissioning Pennant were lowered at sunset time.
- In recognition of the yeoman service rendered to the nation by the ship, a Special Postal Cover was released on the occasion.
Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has launched National Mobile Monitoring Software, NMMS app and Area officer monitoring App through Video-Conferencing.
- The NMMS App permits taking real time attendance of workers at Mahatma Gandhi NREGA worksites along with geotagged photograph, which will increase citizen oversight of the programme besides potentially enabling processing payments faster.
- Area Officer Monitoring App facilitates them to record their findings online along with time stamped and go-coordinate tagged photograph for all the schemes of Department of Rural Development.
Indian Navy has designed an Oxygen Recycling System, ORS to mitigate the current oxygen crisis.
- The Diving School of the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy has conceptualised and designed the System to alleviate the existing Oxygen shortage.
- It is designed to extend the life of the existing medical oxygen cylinders two to four times, using the fact that only a small percentage of oxygen inhaled by a patient is actually absorbed by the lungs, the rest being exhaled along with carbon-dioxide.
OBITUARIES
Indian Boxing's First Dronacharya Awardee Coach O P Bhardwaj passes awayLegendary boxing coach Om Prakash Bharadwaj, the first from the discipline to be honoured with the Dronacharya award in 1985, died following prolonged illness and old-age issues. He was 82.
- Bharadwaj, who coached the national team for several years up to the early 1990s, played a crucial role in starting the boxing course at NIS Patiala in 1975.
- Under his guidance, Indian boxers won medals in major sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Asian championships and South Asian Games.
In a big loss to the Indian shooting fraternity, coach and technical official Monali Gorhe died of mucormycosis. She was 44.
- Monali was the coach of the pistol core group. She had also served as the national coach of the Sri Lankan shooting team. She had set up a shooting coaching center called Excel Shooting in Nashik, where she was training hundreds of students in Maharashtra.
Former Odisha cricket team captain Prashant Mohapatra succumbed to COVID-19 during treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Hr was 47.
- Prashant, popularly known as Munna, was an opener and right-handed batsman. He made his debut in cricket as an under-19 player of the state and played against Tamil Nadu. Later he debuted in the Ranji Trophy against Bihar in 1990.
- He had also played for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy. Prashant has played 45 first-class matches scoring 2,196 runs with a average of 30.08 with five centuries and 11 fifties to his credit.
- After his retirement, the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) had appointed him as a match referee.
J. K. Dutt, former Director General of the National Security Guards (NSG) who headed the force during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, passed away due to COVID-19 related complications. He was 72.
- Jyoti Krishan Dutt was a 1971-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the West Bengal cadre.
- He served as the DG of the National Security Guard (NSG) from August 2006 to February 2009, after which he retired from service.
- He also worked in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and was once appointed as its officiating chief or director in 2005.
BJP MLA from Dhariawad constituency in Rajasthan's Pratapgarh district,Gotam Lal Meena died of COVID-19 at a hospital in Udaipur.He was 56.
- With the demise of Meena, the number of MLAs in the house of 200 has dropped to 198 in Rajasthan.
