Indian Army sets up COVID-19 management cellThe Indian Army has set up a Covid Management Cell to bring in greater efficiency in coordinating real-time responses to address the exponential rise in Covid cases across the country.
- In order to coordinate multiple facets of staffing and logistics support, an exclusive Covid Management Cell under a Director General rank officer has been established which reports directly to the Vice Chief of Army Staff
- The force said that it help in assistance to civil administration in the form of testing, admissions in military hospitals, and transportation of critical medical equipment.
The Centre has released over 8,923 crore rupees to 25 States for providing grants to the Rural Local Bodies in advance, in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The grants are meant for all the three tiers of Panchayati Raj Institutions - village, block and district.
- Panchayati Raj Institutions can utilise the fund among other things for various prevention and mitigation measures needed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

RBI excludes Lakshmi Vilas Bank from second schedule of RBI ActThe banking regulator Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it has excluded Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) from the Second Schedule of the RBI Act.
- This was after LVB merged with DBS Bank India.LVB is the second private sector bank after Yes Bank that has run into rough weather this year.
The Government of India and European Investment Bank (EIB) signed the finance contract for second tranche of 150 million Euro for Pune Metro Rail project through a virtual signing ceremony.
- The project aims to provide efficient, safe, economic and pollution-free Mass Rapid Transit System in densely populated area in the city of Pune served with heterogeneous traffic options.The financing from EIB will help to fund construction and operation of Corridor 1- Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate and Corridor 2 -Vanaz to Ramvadi, totaling about 31.25 kilometer and purchase of a related fleet of metro cars.
- Further, the project will serve large population which consisting working class in providing urban mobility for their livelihood. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd is the implementing agency for this project.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes produced a brilliant, attacking, strategic race to beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the Spanish Grand Prix.
- Hamilton's third win in four races this season came despite losing the lead to Verstappen at the first corner.

Himanta Biswa Sarma chosen Assam’s new chief ministerHimanta Biswa Sarma was named the next chief minister of Assam and he will replace incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal to the top post.
- Sarma’s name was formally confirmed at the first legislature party meeting of the 60 newly elected MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), held at the state assembly, after days of backroom lobbying in Guwahati and official meetings in Delhi following the announcement of assembly election results on May 2.

KVG Bank bags PFRDA awardsKarnataka Vikas Grameen Bank (KVGB), a regional rural bank headquartered in Dharwad, has bagged five awards (Lead to Leap, APY Makers of Excellence, Game Changers, Leadership Capital and Amazing Achievers) under various campaigns held for enrolment of Atal Pension Yojana (APY) from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
- The bank is playing a pivotal role in implementation of social security schemes such as Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Prime Minister Jeevan Jyothi Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), and Prime Minister Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY).
World No. 2 tennis player Naomi Osaka has been named “Sportswoman of the Year” at the Laureus World Sports Awards for her achievements on and off the court, while tennis legend Billie Jean King was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Laureus Academy.
- This is Osaka’s second recognition at the Laureus Sports Awards.

- Titled Elephant In The Womb, the book, illustrated by Valeriya Polyanychko, will be a combination of personal essays and think-pieces.

Eminent sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra passes awayEminent sculptor and Rajya Sabha member Padma Vibhushan Raghunath Mohapatra passed away while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. He was 77.
- In 2018, President Ram Nath Kovind nominated Mr. Mohapatra — first person from Odisha — to the Rajya Sabha. As a doyen of stone sculpture, he was chosen for India’s second highest civilian award — Padma Vibhushan — in 2013.
- The talented artist had just turned 22 in 1964 when he got national award for sculpture and in 1975, Padma Shri was bestowed upon him. In 2001, he was felicitated with the Padma Bhushan. Over five decades, he honed the skills of over 2,000 sculptors.
India lost two revered hockey stars, Maharaj Krishan Kaushik and Ravinder Pal Singh, who were both members of the 1980 Moscow Olympics gold medal-winning side.
- Kaushik, a goal scorer in India’s 1980 Games final against Spain, lost battle to Covid-19 at a hospital in Delhi. He was 66.That was the last time, 36 years ago, India won an Olympic hockey medal.After his playing days, Kaushik became the chief coach of the Indian women’s and men’s teams.In 2002, he received the Dronacharya Award, the highest official accolade for coaches in India. Earlier, he had received the Arjuna Award, in 1998.
- Ravinder Pal Singh died aged 60 in Lucknow after battling Covid-19 for nearly two weeks.Besides playing in the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Singh appeared in several top international tournaments, including the Champions Trophy in Karachi in 1980 and 1983, 1982 World Cup in Mumbai, 1982 Asia Cup in Karachi, the 1981 India-Pakistan Test series, and the Malaysian Quadrangular series in 1980. Singh began his international career in 1979.He was picked in the Junior Indian team for the World Cup.

- In 2019, Lalti Ram had presented a cap of the pre-Independence INA to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event to mark the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the 'Azad Hind Sarkar' by freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.
