Army Commanders’ Conference began in New Delhi

The biannual Army Commanders’ Conference began in New Delhi. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered her opening address at the conference.

  • The Conference, chaired by the Chief of the Army Staff is held biannually for formulating important policy decisions. It is an important event for the planning and execution process of the Indian Army.


India & SL to increase defence cooperation

India and Sri Lanka have agreed to increase cooperation in security and defence spheres in several areas, including regional security, curbing drug smuggling and human trafficking. The issues came up for discussion when Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra called on Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirsena in Colombo during his official visit.

  • It was agreed that the Defence Secretary and his Sri Lankan counterpart will continue discussions on these issues to further strengthen security cooperation between the two countries.

US – Morocco Joint Military Exercise “African Lion 2019” Concludes

The 16th edition of the joint military exercise between Morocco and the United States named “African Lion 2019” was held from March 16 to April 7, 2019 in southern Morocco in the cities of Agadir, Tifnit, Tan-Tan, Tata, and Ben Guerir near Marrakech.

  • African Lion is an annual exercise organised to improve interoperability and mutual understanding of each nation’s tactics, techniques and procedures.


US Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen Steps Down

Kirstjen Nielsen, the US secretary of homeland security, is stepping down, President Donald Trump announced. Her departure follows a spike in the number of arrests at the US-Mexico border that has coincided with a rise in migration northward from countries in Central America.

  • Ms Nielsen, who also served in the George W Bush administration, became head of department in December 2017 and has been best-known for her role in the Trump administration’s separation of children from their parents on the US-Mexico border.

New Seller-Funding Programme " Amazon Wings " Was Launched By Amazon India

Amazon India has joined hands with Mumbai-based crowdfunding company Ketto to help its sellers raise funding for business expansion, product development and even for medical assistance. Under this initiative, Amazon will solicit interest from sellers to apply to Ketto for participation in the program.

  • As a part of the programme named Amazon Wings to empower the sellers in India, the company will allow its sellers to use Ketto’s platform and raise small ticket funds beginning from INR 50K at a subsidized fee for initiating fundraisers.

Malaysia Open: Lin Dan wins men's singles title

Veteran Lin Dan won the all-Chinese final to take the men's singles title at the Malaysia Open badminton tournament in Kuala Lumpur. Lin, two-time Olympic champion, rallied from one set down to beat compatriot Chen Long 9-21, 21-17 and 21-11 in the 78-minute final.

  • The women's singles saw Taiwanese top seed Tai Tzu-ying clinch her third consecutive Malaysia Open title after a dominant 21-16, 21-19 triumph over Japan's Akane Yamaguchi.

Pradeep Nandrajog Appointed As The Chief Justice Of Bombay HC

Justice Pradeep Nandrajog took oath as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He was administered the oath by Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao at the Raj Bhavan.

  • He succeeds Chief Justice Naresh Patil, who retired recently. Justice Nandrajog had been serving as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court since March 2017, following a transfer from the Delhi High Court.

Tata Steel wins 'Global Slag Company of the Year' award

Tata Steel has been named as the 'Global Slag Company of the Year' at the 14th Global Slag Conference and Exhibition 2019. The award was presented to Tata Steel for its innovative practices in development of new applications for Steel by-products (Slag).

  • The conference, held recently in Aachen, Germany, was one of the largest global annual slag event, attended by major steelmakers, steel mill service providers & associated companies.










OBITUARIES


Sydney Brenner, pioneer of molecular biology passes away

Sydney Brenner, the Nobel laureate whose studies on the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans led to seminal discoveries in genetics and developmental biology, passed away in Singapore. He was 92.

  • Brenner discovered fundamental steps in how cells use DNA to make the proteins that enable life. He found that sequences of three DNA bases code for the amino acids that form proteins.

World Health Day

Every year, the World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 as a global health awareness day under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization. The day celebrates the establishment of the WHO and this year it marks the end of the World Health Organization’s 70th-anniversary celebrations.

  • The WHO’s theme for World Health Day 2019 is ‘Universal Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere’ to ensure that no human being will ever have to make a choice between the two.
