TRIFED signs MoU with Arunachal Pradesh for implementation of MSP for MFP Scheme and Van Dhan Yojana
TRIFED has signed a MoU with Government of Arunachal Pradesh for the implementation of the MSP for MFP Scheme and the Van Dhan Yojana in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Rural Development Department in State of Arunachal Pradesh will be the nodal agency for the implementation of this scheme while Arunachal Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (ArSRLM) will be the State Implementation Agency.
  • Under this agreement, 100 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras are planned to be set-up in the state this year.
India, France working on third joint space mission: ISRO 
The Chairman of ISRO K. Sivan has informed that India and France have been working on their third Joint satellite Mission, even as the bilateral space collaboration has been entering into multiple domains, including the human space flight programme.
  • ISRO and French space agency CNES (Centre National dEtudes Spatiales) have undertaken two joint missions 'Megha-Tropiques', which was launched in 2011, and 'Saral-Altika' in 2013.
Nirmala Sitharaman launches Central Scrutiny Centre and IEPFA mobile App
Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched Central Scrutiny Centre and Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority, IEPFA mobile App to leverage digital solutions to achieve Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Digitally empowered India.
  • The Mobile App aims at achieving the goal of financial literacy, spreading investors’ awareness, education, and protection among investors. The Mobile App has been developed for citizen engagement and information dissemination to promote awareness among investors.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India to be the third largest economy in 10 years: BofA Securities
India is likely to emerge as the world’s third largest economy in 2031 (fiscal 2031-32), suggests a recent report by BofA Securities, and should touch Japan's nominal GDP (in USD) that year.
  • The projections have assumed 6 per cent real growth rate, 5 per cent inflation and 2 per cent depreciation. Currently, India is the world's sixth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP).
  • Besides, BofA Securities has identified two additional drivers - forex reserves buffer and softer real lending rates - that can help the country become the world's third largest over the years.

Adani Ports to acquire 58% stake in Gangavaram Port 
Adani Ports will acquire 58% stake in Gangavaram Port for ₹3,604 crore, the company announced in a regulatory filing.
  • The acquisition is in line with Company’s strategy of East Coast to West Coast parity and will provide an access to growth from new hinterland markets as it has coverage in resource rich and industrial belt in Eastern, Central & Southern India.

Khelo India Scheme extended till 2025-26
Khelo India Scheme has been extended to 2025-26 from 2021-22 , Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced in Rajya Sabha.
  • The Ministry has furnished an Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) memorandum to the Ministry of Finance for extension/continuation of the Khelo India Scheme from 2021-22 to 2025- 26.
  • An amount of Rs 8750 crore has been estimated as financial implication of the new Khelo India Scheme (2021-22 to 2025-26) in the EFC memorandum furnished to the Ministry of Finance. An amount of Rs 657.71 crore has been allocated in the Budget Estimate (B.E.) for the year 2021-22 under the Khelo India Scheme.
Yogasana included in Khelo India Youth Games 2021: Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government has included Yogasana in Khelo India Youth Games 2021 in a bid to develop it as a competitive sport.
  • The Government recognition makes NYSF eligible for financial assistance for conduct of national championships in all the categories, viz. Senior, Junior and Sub-junior and participation in international sporting events.


APPOINTMENTS

Congo's President Sassou Nguesso re-elected for fourth term
Congo Republic President Denis Sassou Nguesso has been re-elected with more than 88% of the vote, official results showed, extending his 36 years leading the Central African oil producer despite a prolonged economic crisis.
  • Sassou is a former paratrooper who took power in 1979. He lost Congo's first multi-party elections in 1992 but returned to office in 1997 after a civil war.
  • He changed the constitution in 2015 to extend term limits that would have barred him from standing for re-election the following year.
Atish Chandra appointed CMD of FCI
Atish Chandra has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director, Food Corporation of India in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary.
  • Mr Chandra, a 1994 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, is currently Joint Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare.
Saurabh Garg named as new UIDAI CEO
Senior bureaucrat Saurabh Garg has been named as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This development is made as part of the bureaucratic reshuffle announced by the Centre.
  • At present, Garg is serving in his cadre state Odisha. He is a 1991 batch IAS officer.
  • Prior to Garg, Ajay Bhushan Pandey was the CEO of UIDAI. On March 3, 2020, Pandey was named as the new Finance Secretary by the centre.
Sanjeev Kumar appointed as Chairman of Airports Authority of India 
The government appointed senior IAS officer Sanjeev Kumar as the chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI).
  • Kumar is a 1993 batch, Maharashtra cadre IAS officer.
  • The chairman’s position had fallen vacant after previous incumbent, Arvind Singh, was recently appointed tourism secretary.
Principal Scientific Advisor K. Vijay Raghavan gets extension
The government has extended the term of Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) K. Vijay Raghavan by a year.
  • He was appointed PSA in 2018 after retiring as Secretary of, Department of Biotechnology.
  • His contract ends on April 2 but has now been extended until April 2022.

Asha Bhosle to be honoured with ‘Maharashtra Bhushan
The Maharashtra government said singer Asha Bhosle has been selected for the Maharashtra Bhushan award, the State government’s highest honour.
  • The award, instituted in 1996 by the State government to recognise distinguished work and achievements of eminent persons from the State, representing different walks of life, carries a cash prize of ₹10 lakh and a citation.
IIT Kharagpur team wins CoreNet Global Academic Challenge 6.0
A team of four undergraduate students from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-K) emerged as winners at the CoreNet Global Academic Challenge 6.0, sponsored by Cushman and Wakefield, KI and IA: Interior Architects.
  • The team comprised of Siddhant Samarth (3rd year, Department of Civil Engineering), Pratim Majumdar (3rd year, Department of Chemical Engineering), Rishita Raj (2nd year, Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Utkarsh Agrawal (3rd year, Department of Manufacturing Science and Engineering), and were guided by Prof. Jenia Mukherjee (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences).
  • This is the first time a squad from India has emerged as winners in the CoreNet Global Academic Challenge since the inception of the competition in 2015.
Esaf Small Finance Bank awarded ‘Great Place to Work’ certification
Kerala based ESAF Small Finance Bank had been awarded ‘Great place to work’ certification by the Great place to Work Institute.
  • The certification is the result of an employee survey conducted by the third-party global authority on recognising high-trust and performance culture at workplaces.
  • This recognition acknowledges the bank’s commitment and credibility amongst its employees.

Acclaimed Polish poet Adam Zagajewski passes away 
Renowned Polish poet Adam Zagajewski has passed away. He was 75.
  • He was a leading figure in Poland’s New Wave or Generation ’68, a literary movement of the late 1960s that called for a simple language to relate directly to reality. Zagajewski’s “Try to Praise the Mutilated World,” was translated into English by Clare Cavanaugh and published in The New Yorker.
  • Zagajewski, who wrote a poem that came to symbolise the world's sense of shock and loss after the September. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.

Pashudhan Mela’ inaugurated in Kathua, J&K
In Jammu and Kashmir, Principal Secretary Animal & Sheep Husbandry Department, Naveen Kumar Chaudhary has inaugurated ‘Pashudhan Mela’ in Kathua.
  • During the Mela, a variety of breeds of cattle and buffalo from the neighbouring state of Punjab  including breeds from Kashmir were put on display.
  • 'Pashudhan Mela’ is the first of its kind Mela held in the Union Territory organized with the objective to educate farmers about the latest cattle breeds.
Regional SARAS Fair 2021 inaugurated in Kohima
The regional Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society (SARAS) fair 2021 offering the best of traditional, ethnic food, handlooms and handicrafts of the State, was inaugurated by Advisor, Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire at Khouchiezie Kohima Local Ground.
  • The fair was an initiative of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and was organised by Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM), Department of Rural Development, Nagaland.
  • This fair aims to market rural products thereby providing an opportunity for income generation to the Self Help Groups and rural artisans. It also aims to promote rural products and build capacities of Self Help Groups by bringing them under one platform where they can promote their products through exhibition and sale.
Manipur emerges as a model state for Van Dhan Vikas Yojana
Manipur has emerged as the champion state where the Van Dhan programme has emerged as a major source of employment for the local tribals. Since the time that the programme was launched in the state in October 2019, 100 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras have been established.
  • These constitute 1500 SHGs and are benefitting 30,000 tribal entrepreneurs, who are involved in the collection, processing, value-adding, packaging and marketing of value-added products from minor forest produce.
  • With an active cooperation and participation of the state government at every level, the Van DhanKendras of Manipur have turned out to be a model enterprise for the rest of the country.
South Korea’s National Defence Minister on 3- day visit to India 
Minister of National Defence of Republic of Korea (RoK) Mr Suh Wook on a  three day visit to India.
  • During the visit, the dignitary will hold bilateral meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to discuss India-RoK defence cooperation along with other regional and international issues of mutual interest.
  • Ministry of Defence in a statement said that an Indo-Korean Friendship Park will also be jointly inaugurated by the visiting dignitary and Raksha Mantri at Delhi Cantt. Mr Suh Wook  will also travel to Agra during the visit.
Lakshadweep, J&K's Budgam First in India to Be Declared TB-free: Harsh Vardhan
Lakshadweep and Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district are the first in the country to be declared TB-free, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Singh said on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day celebrations at Dr Ambedkar International Centre.
  • Singh said asked all citizens to rise to the occasion and make India's resolve to end tuberculosis by 2025 into a Jan Andolan.
  • Awards were also given to best performing states/UTs based on their State TBI Index. Lakshadweep (UT) and the district of Budgam (J&K) were declared TB-free.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister inaugurates Kurnool Airport
The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has inaugurated the Kurnool Airport located at Orvakal  and  named it after the first ever freedom fighter of the country,  Uyyalavada Narasimha Reddy, as a tribute to him.
  • The flight operations from the airport will commence from  March, 28th servicing to Bengaluru,Visakhapatnam, and Chennai routes.
  • Later the Chief Minister has released a Special Postage Stamp on the occasion of the inauguration of Kurnool Airport.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

One in 5 children globally face extreme water shortage, reveal new UNICEF Study
A  new report by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that 1 in 5 children worldwide does not have enough water to  bemeet everyday needs. The report says that globally, more than 1.42 billion people, including 450 million children, live in areas of extreme water vulnerability.
  • The report was part of its ‘Water Security For All’ initiative. It identifies areas where physical water scarcity risks overlap with poor water service levels. Communities living in these areas depend on surface water, unimproved sources, or water which can take more than 30 minutes to collect.
  • The data shows that children in more than 80 countries live in areas with high or extremely high water vulnerability. Eastern and Southern Africa has the highest proportion of children living in such areas, with more than half of children – 58 per cent – facing difficulty accessing sufficient water every day.
  • It is followed by West and Central Africa (31 per cent), South Asia (25 per cent), and the Middle East (23 per cent). South Asia is home to the largest number of children living in areas of high or extremely high water vulnerability – more than 155 million children.
World's first 'Super Mario' theme park opens in Japan
Super Nintendo World has officially become a reality- for Japan at least. Universal Studios Japan (USJ) opened its $550 million, pandemic-delayed Mario-themed attraction, marking this as a major leap for the gamers maker outside of the virtual world.
  • The biggest attraction in Super Nintendo World is the Mario Kart-themed ride. It also includes the world's first interactive Mario Kart theme park ride and a battle with Bowser Jr., one of the characters.
  • The area, which cost more than 60 billion yen (US$550 million) to build, offers rides with an augmented reality feature that allows visitors to enjoy an interactive experience similar to playing the Super Mario game.
Dubai International Airport Partners with Magzter to Become World's First 'Smart Reading Airport
From today, customers flying through Dubai International (DXB) now have free access to Magzter’s collection of more than 7,000 leading magazines, newspapers, journals and comics, making DXB the world’s first smart reading airport’. 
  • A fully contactless and paperless digital experience – using geo-fencing satellite technology – the Magzter partnership enables customers travelling through DXB to download the latest issues of world-renowned publications on their own devices, to read in the airport and onboard their flights.
  • DXB’s Smart Reading Zone’ can also be accessed by logging onto the airport’s super-fast, free wifi network, which acts as a gateway to Magzter’s extensive collection of publications.
World's first ship tunnel to be built under Norwegian mountains
World’s First Ship Tunnel is being made in the Norwegian mountains as the country has given approval for a tunnel bypassing the Stadhavet Sea.
  • With this tunnel in place, vessels bound for the treacherous waters of Stadhavet can easily navigate without much difficulty. The tunnel was proposed by the Norwegian Coastal Administration a few years ago who thought a 118 feet wide tunnel passing through the Stadhavet mountains would be good for shipping.
  • The government expects an estimated cost of 2.8 billion Norwegian kroner ($330 million) to build this ship tunnel in 4 years. Construction work will begin next year.

Indian Overseas Bank launches ‘IOB Trendy’ savings account for millennials
Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) launched ‘IOB Trendy’, a savings account customised for the growing millennial population in the country by keeping their banking preferences in mind.
  • For opening an IOB Trendy account, a customer needs to be within the age bracket of 21 – 38 years.
  • There is no ‘Opening Balance’ requirement for IOB Trendy. So, no charges will be levied for the first month for non-maintenance of balance. However, IOB Trendy customers need to maintain a daily minimum balance of ₹10,000 or a daily minimum balance of ₹5,000 and a digital turnover (transactions using IOB ATM / CDM / IOB Mobile Banking or Internet Banking fund transfer / IOB UPI transactions or IOB Debit card POS transactions) of minimum of ₹20,000 per month.

Indian Army to Get 1,300 Made-in-India Armoured Light Combat Vehicles by Mahindra Defence
The defence ministry said it finalised a contract with Mahindra Defence Systems Ltd (MDSL) to procure 1,300 light combat vehicles for the Indian Army at a cost of Rs 1,056 crore. The induction of the vehicles is planned to be completed in four years.
  • The vehicles are extremely agile with all-round protection against small arms fire and they will assist small independent detachments.

ICC T20 Player rankings: Virat Kohli moves to 4th position, Rohit Sharma to 14th
India captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma are among the India batsmen to progress in the ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings after clinching the home series against England 3-2 in Ahmedabad.
  • Kohli has moved up one place to fourth position and Rohit moved up three places to 14th in the latest weekly rankings update.
  • Shreyas Iyer has moved up five places to a career-best 26th position while rookie Suryakumar Yadav and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant also made rapid progress. Seam bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has moved up 21 places to 24th while Hardik Pandya has advanced 47 places to 78th.
  • In the ICC ODI Player Rankings, India opener Shikhar Dhawan's match-winning 98 has lifted him two places to 15th and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has gained five places to move into the top 20 in the latest ODI update.
Asghar Afghan breaks MS Dhoni record as Afghanistan Sweep Zimbabwe T20I Series
Afghanistan's Asghar Afghan went past former India captain MS Dhoni to become the most successful captain in T20 internationals.
  • Asghar achieved the feat following Afghanistan's 47-run win over Zimbabwe in the third T20I at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
  • Afghan has now recorded 42 wins in T20I format and has surpassed Dhoni's tally of 41 victories. He had equalled Dhoni's record of most wins as captain in men's T20I history after Afghanistan had defeated Zimbabwe in the second T20I match.
Narwal Shoots Second Gold in Para-Shooting WC with New World Record
Promising Manish Narwal shattered the world record en route clinching the gold in the P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1 event on the penultimate day of the 2021 Para Shooting World Cup.
  • This was India’s second gold medal in the event after Singhraj claimed the yellow metal in P1 men’s 10m air pistol SH1 event.
  • He overcame a strong field that had Paralympic and world champions, including Iranian Sareh Javanmardi and Ukraine’s Oleksii Denusiuk, to finish with 229.1 points, enough to break the previous world record of Serbia’s Rastko Jokic (228.6).

Kerala's TB eradication programme bags award
Kerala's tuberculosis eradication programme has won national honour as the state bagged the Union government's award for reducing the prevalence of the disease through various systematic initiatives.
  • Kerala is the lone state which has been chosen for the recognition in the state category, a Health department statement said.
  • An expert panel, designated by the Union government, recently found that the southern state has reduced the TB prevalence rate by 37.5 per cent in the last five years as part of achieving the sustainable development goals.

Education Minister launches more than one hundred comic books
Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has launched more than one hundred comic books created by teachers and students of CBSE schools and curated by NCERT.
  • The comics are aligned with topics of NCERT textbooks and have specific storyline and characters.
  • It has been created in a linear progression which will help to understand basic concepts and decrease the learning gaps. These comics can be accessed online on DIKSHA web portal and DIKSHA app.

International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members
March 25 is the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members. This date is the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett, a journalist who died while working for the UN.
  • This is a day to mobilize action, demand justice and strengthen our resolve to protect UN staff and peacekeepers, as well as our colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press.
International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is on March 25 each year.
  • It honors the lives of those who died as a result of slavery or experienced the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade. It is also an occasion to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice.
  • This year theme of International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is “Ending Slavery’s Legacy of Racism: A Global Imperative for Justice”. 
International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims
International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed annually on 24th March every year to pay tribute to “Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero” as he was murdered on 24 March 1980.
  • The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims aims to honour the memory of victims of gross and systematic human rights violations. It also aims to promote the importance of the right to truth and justice.
