Manipur's Chandel Tops List of Aspirational Districts in June: Niti Aayog
Chandel district in Manipur has topped the list of aspirational districts ranked by government think tank Niti Aayog FOR for the month of June.
  • Sahibganj (Jharkhand) and Firozpur (Punjab) have been ranked at the second and third positions, respectively, Niti Aayog said.
  • Dhubri (Assam) and Kiphire (Nagaland) are at the fourth and fifth places, respectively. The delta rankings took into account incremental progress made by over 112 aspirational districts across six developmental areas in June 2021.
Karnataka becomes the first state in India to provide reservation for transgenders in all government services
Karnataka has become the first state in the country to provide one per cent reservation for the 'transgender' community in all the government services.
  •  The government submitted a report to the High Court in this regard informing that a notification had already been issued after amending the Karnataka Civil Service (General Recruitment) Rule, 1977.
  • In case of non-availability of transgender candidates, the job could be given to male or female from the same category, the notification notes.
Ministry of S&T Allocated Over Rs 1,600 Cr for Covid-related Research, Product Development
The Ministry of Science and Technology has allocated over Rs 1,600 crore for COVID-19 related research and product development, the government informed Rajya Sabha.
  • The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and its public sector undertaking Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) have allocated approximately Rs 1,300 crore for COVID-19 related research and product development, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said.
  • Under the COVID-19 research consortium, as a part of the comprehensive efforts to facilitate development of indigenous research solutions to tackle COVID-19, 107 projects were supported in thematic areas of vaccines (17), diagnostics (45), therapeutics (22) and biomedical interventions (23). To advance biomedical research, the DBT has supported five COVID-19 biorepositories.
Meghalaya signs MoU with Invest India to boost trade 
Meghalaya State Investment Promotion Society (MSIP) signed an MoU with Invest India of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to boost trade and industries in the state.
  • The objective of the MoU is to leverage investment opportunities in key development sectors to boost trade and industries in the state.
  • The targets will be focussed on both short term and long term plans. This will enhance the entrepreneurial system in the state while also focussing on promoting one product-one district programme.
Centre to implement Deep Ocean Mission at total budget of Rs 4,077 crore for 5 years
The government will implement the Deep Ocean Mission at a total budget of over 4,077 crore rupees for five years. All the components of the Mission will commence in 2021.
  • This information was given in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by the Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
  • The Minister said a manned submersible to be developed carrying three people to a depth of six thousand metres in the ocean for exploration of deep-sea mineral resources and marine biodiversity.
NITI Aayog and RMI release report on power distribution sector
NITI Aayog released a report which presents reform pathways to transform the country’s power distribution sector. The report, titled ‘Turning Around the Power Distribution Sector’, is co-authored by NITI Aayog, RMI and RMI India.
  • The report presents a review of reform efforts in the Indian and global power distribution sector. ‘NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar said that the report examines many important reforms such as the role of the private sector in distribution, power procurement, regulatory oversight, integration of renewable energy, and upgradation of infrastructure.
  • NITI Aayog Member Dr V.K. Saraswat said that this report presents policymakers with a menu of reform options to put the distribution sector on the track of efficiency and profitability. He said that NITI Aayog will partner with some of the states to take these reforms forward.
Haryana creates history, secures first place in CCTNS, score 100%
Haryana creates history, secures first place in CCTNS, score 100% Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said that the state has secured first position in the country in Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS) system with 100 percent score.
  • It is for the first time that Haryana Police has secured the first position in the country with 100 percent marks under this system, while Gujarat has secured the second position with 99.9 per cent marks and Himachal Pradesh has got the third position with 99.6 per cent marks.

Mumbai, Bengaluru lose top-100 spots in QS Best Student Cities Ranking
Mumbai and Bengaluru are out of the global top-100 list and are currently ranking at 106 and 110, respectively in the latest edition of the QS Best Student Cities Ranking.While Mumbai lost 29 places, Bengaluru fell by 21 places in the ninth edition of the rankings brought out by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds.
  • However, among the different metrics as part of the methodology, Mumbai gained 27 places in the 'Affordability' indicator to rank at 21st globally. On the other hand, despite losing three places in the same indicator, Bengaluru was placed seventh globally in the affordability metric.
  • London retain its status as the world’s best student city for the third consecutive edition. It is followed by Munich, which rises from 4th to 2nd. Seoul, which jumps from 10th to joint-3rd, shares the bronze-medal position with Olympic hosts Tokyo.
  • Among other leading cities globally in the rankings, Boston is the only new entrant into the top ten, rising from 13th to joint-9th, sharing its position with Paris and Montreal.  Germany and Australia are the only locations to have two of the world’s ten best student cities each, whereas Switzerland’s Lausanne enjoys a noteworthy debut in the rankings, placing 19th.
Germany becomes 5th country to sign International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement
Germany became the 5th country to sign International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement after amendments to it entered into force on 8th January this year, opening its Membership to all Member States of the United Nations.
  • Ambassador of Germany to India Walter J. Lindner deposited signed copies of International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement with Ministry of External Affairs, the depositary of Agreement. Signed copies of International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement were handed over to Additional Secretary (Economic Relations) in Ministry of External Affairs.

SBI reports 55% jump in first quarter net profit of Rs 6,504 crore
Country’s largest lender, State Bank of India, SBI, reported a 55 per cent jump in its first quarter net profit of 6,504 crore rupees in comparison to the same quarter last year.
  • SBI’s net interest income in the quarter rose 3.7 percent to 26,642 crore rupees, while other income soared 48.5 percent to 11,802.7 crore rupees.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur launched the theme song for Tokyo Paralympics in New Delhi.
  • Mr Thakur said, Indian para-athletes have performed consistently in the International para-sports competitions and brought laurels for the country.
  • The Sports Minister said, biggest ever Indian contingent of 54 para-athletes will participate in the Tokyo Paralympics in nine disciplines and they will give their optimum best.

Mini Ipe takes charge as Managing Director of IPO-bound LIC
Mini Ipe has taken charge as Managing Director of the IPO-bound Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). She was appointed as managing director vide the Government of India notification dated 5 July 2021.
  • She is a postgraduate in Commerce from Andhra University and in 1986, She became part of LIC as a direct recruit officer.Along with it, she has served as Executive Director (International Operations), Director & CEO of LICHFL Financial Services Ltd.
  • Ipe was the first (1st) woman zonal manager (In-charge) of LIC and headed the Hyderabad zone.

Pak climber becomes world's youngest mountaineer to scale K2
A 19-year old Pakistani climber became the youngest person in the world to reach the summit of K2, the second-highest peak in the world.
  • Mr. Shehroze Kashif from Lahore achieved the feat of scaling the 8,611-metre high peak with the aid of bottled oxygen.
  • Mr. Kashif also scaled the world's 12th-highest mountain, the 8,047-meter Broad Peak, at the age of 17. In May this year, he became the youngest Pakistani to scale Mount Everest.
West Bengal receives four SKOCH awards for its schemes under Ease of Doing Business initiative
The Government of West Bengal has received four SKOCH awards for its schemes under the Ease of Doing Business initiative.
  • The State scheme ‘Silpasathi’-the online single window portal won the platinum award while the Auto Renewal of Certificate of Enlistment through online system for urban areas has received the gold award.
  • Online issuance of trade licences in rural areas and the E-Nathikaran: the online system for registration, preparation and submission of deeds have won two silver awards.

Commencement of sea trials of Indigenous Aircraft Carrier ‘Vikrant’
Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant’ designed by Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design(DND) is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited(CSL), a Public Sector Shipyard under Ministry of Shipping (MoS).
  • The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier is 262 m long, 62 m at the widest part and height of 59 m including the superstructure. There are 14 decks in all, including five in the superstructure. The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers.
  • The ship has been designed with a very high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability, ‘Vikrant’ has a top speed of around 28 knots and cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles. The ship can accommodate an assortment of fixed wing and rotary aircraft.
WhatsApp launches its ‘View Once’ disappearing photos and videos
Messaging app WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature called 'View Once' this week. A photo or a video immediately will be deleted from the chat once opened by the recipient through WhatsApp's 'View once' feature.
  • The message will be shown as "opened" once the media content has been viewed.
  • The recipient will also be able to see that it is a 'view ones' photo/video, so this new feature one would want to use for people you trust to not take a screenshot.
World's first commercial fully re-programmable satellite lifts off by ESA
Eutelsat Quantum, the world's first commercial fully re-programmable satellite lifted off from French Guiana on board an Ariane 5 rocket, with the hope of a new era of more flexible communications.
  •  Eutelsat Quantum, developed under an ESA partnership project with satellite operator Eutelsat and prime manufacturer Airbus, is the first commercial fully flexible software-defined satellite in the world.
  • The mass of the satellite at launch is 3.5 tonnes and its design lifetime is 15 years.The satellite will provide communications on the move with dynamic beam shaping and vessel-tracking capabilities, optimised for power and throughput as required by maritime, aeronautical and land-based transportation.

Govt has allocated over Rs 756 crore under FAME scheme till June his year
Government has allocated over 756 crore rupees under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, FAME scheme till June this year.
  • The main objective of the scheme is to encourage Faster adoption of Electric and hybrid vehicle by way of offering upfront incentive on purchase of Electric vehicles and establishing a necessary charging Infrastructure for electric vehicles.
  • The scheme, launched in 2015, is aimed at addressing the issue of environmental pollution and fuel security.
Bhubaneswar becomes first city in country to achieve 100% vaccination against covid-19
Odisha capital Bhubaneswar has become the first city in India to achieve hundred percent vaccination of its people against covid-19.
  • Additionally, about one lakh migrant workers have also been administered the first dose of covid vaccine in the capital city.

IndusInd Bank gets empanelled as Agency Bank to RBI
IndusInd Bank said it has been empanelled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to act as an 'Agency Bank' to facilitate transactions related to government businesses.
  • It will strengthen the bank's presence within the government domain, IndusInd Bank said.
  • The announcement comes close on the heels of a recent RBI guideline that authorises scheduled private sector banks as agency banks of the regulator for the conduct of government business.
SBI launches new & enhanced security feature – ‘SIM Binding’ in YONO & YONO Lite app
To safeguard the interest of its customers, Country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has launched a new and enhanced security feature – ‘SIM Binding’ in YONO and YONO Lite app.
  • The new version of these platforms will protect customers from various digital frauds. With the SIM Binding feature, YONO and YONO Lite will work only on those devices which have the SIM Card of mobile numbers registered with the Bank.
  • To get access to the new version of YONO and YONO Lite, users will have to their mobile app and complete the one-time registration process on these Apps. The registration process verifies the SIM of the Registered Mobile Number (RMN) with the bank in order to complete the registration. Customers will have to ensure that they register with the device which has the SIM of the registered contact number.
Indian Bank signs MoU with IIT Bombay for extending exclusive credit facility to Start-ups and MSMEs
Indian Bank entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) – an initiative of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay – for extending exclusive credit facility to Start-ups and MSMEs.
  • The Bank will extend loans of up to 50 crore rupees to these start-ups for their working capital requirements or purchase of machinery and equipment.
  • As the name goes, this initiative, which is mutually beneficial for both Bank and IIT, Bombay, will be the spring board for start-ups to realise their ambitions.

India's services exports at USD 19.72 billion in June: RBI data
India''s services exports increased 24.1 per cent month-on-month to USD 19.72 billion in June 2021, the Reserve Bank of India said.
  • The exports stood at USD 17.35 billion in May and USD 17.54 billion in April.The RBI further said imports in June were valued at USD 11.14 billion, up 24.8 per cent on sequential basis.
  • The imports stood at USD 10.23 billion in May and USD 9.89 billion in the previous month.

Myanmar army chief appoints himself Prime Minister, promises election by 2023
The State Administration Council of Myanmar has been reformed as ‘Caretaker government of Myanmar’ headed by the Chief of the Myanmar military Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as the Prime Minister.
  • In a televised speech Gen. Hlaing also pledged to hold elections by 2023. He said that his administration was ready to work with a future regional envoy appointed by the ASEAN on Myanmar.
  • General Hlaing took over power in Myanmar in February after removing the government headed by the State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1, a day before the newly elected parliament was set to meet.
Nikol Pashinyan re-appointed as Armenian PM
Nikol Pashinyan has been re-appointed as the prime minister of Armenia by President Armen Sarkissian.
  •  Pashinyan, the leader of the Civil Contract Party, won the majority of seats in parliamentary elections in June 2021. The 46-year-old Pashinyan was first appointed as the prime minister in 2018.

IIT Madras launches India’s first consortium for Virtual Reality
Indian Institute of Technology Madras has launched the country's first Consortium for Virtual Reality called 'Consortium for VR/AR/MR Engineering Mission in India' (CAVE). As a group of academia, industries, start-ups, and Government bodies, this consortium is being coordinated by IIT Madras.
  • The main objective of this consortium is to enable members to create new advanced technologies and applications in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality (XR) and haptics together. Their research collaboration would be undertaken with industrial sponsors and participants from industry, academia, and Government.
  • The consortium will promote best practices, dialogue with all stakeholders, government policymakers, and research institutions. It aims to become a resource for industry, academia, consumers, and policymakers interested in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality

Film critic Rashid Irani passes away
Eminent film critic Rashid Irani, a much-loved figure in the cinema circles of the city, was found dead at his residence here. He was 74.
  • Irani, who had contributed several articles in national dailies like Times of India, Hindustan Times and the website Scroll.in, was "one of the pillars of the Mumbai Press Club Film Society.
Veteran Odisha Politician Arun Dey passes away 
Trade union leader, activist and five-time MLA of Odisha, Arun Dey, passed away at the age of 75 at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
  • He was elected to the Assembly in 1980 and 1990 from Balasore. In 1995 he contested as an independent candidate and won it. In 2004 he was again elected on behalf of the Odisha Gana Parishad.
  • Dey had contested the assembly election from Balasore in 2014 on Congress ticket. However, he lost to the Biju Janata Dal’s Jiban Pradip Das. The veteran leader joined the BJD headed by Chief Minister Patnaik ahead of the 2019 elections.

Cabinet approves DICGC act ensuring Rs 5 lakh for depositors in 90 days
The Union Cabinet cleared changes to the deposit insurance laws to provide funds up to Rs 5 lakh to an account holder within 90 days in the event of a bank coming under the moratorium imposed by the RBI.
  • Earlier, account holders had to wait for years till the liquidation or restructuring of a distressed lender to get their deposits that are insured against default.
  • The government has also permitted raising the deposit insurance premium by 20 per cent immediately, and maximum by 50 per cent. The premium is paid by banks to the DICGC.
  • The Centre plans to introduce the Deposit Insurance & Credit Guarantee Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2021 in the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament.
Government launches digital tools to improve logistics efficiency, sustainability
The government has launched the Secured Logistics Document Exchange (SLDE) along with a Calculator for Green House Gas Emission to improve ease of doing business, logistics efficiency, reduce logistics cost, and promote multi-modality and sustainability.
  • The SLDE platform is a solution to replace the present manual process of generation, exchange and compliance of logistics documents with a digitized, secure and seamless document exchange system.
  • The GHG Calculator is an efficient, user-friendly tool and provides for calculating and comparing GHG emissions across different modes.

RBI's New Rules on Interchange Fee, 24/7 Bulk Clearing Facility Functional
The Reserve Bank of India’s new directions on raising interchange fee and making available the facility of bulk clearing round the clock have become effective from August 1 onwards.
  • The RBI in June raised the interchange fee for financial transactions from Rs 15 to Rs 17, while for non-financial transactions the increase was done from Rs 5 to Rs 6. 
  • These new rates have become applicable from August 1, 2021, as per the RBI’s direction. An interchange fee is a fee charged by banks to the merchant who processes a credit card or debit card payment.
PM Modi launches e-RUPI, a cashless and contactless instrument for digital payment 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched e-RUPI, an electronic voucher-based digital payment system.
  • e-RUPI is a cashless and contactless instrument for digital payment. It gets delivered to the mobile phones of beneficiaries through a QR code or SMS string.
  • The users of this new one-time payment mechanism will be able to redeem the voucher without a card, digital payments app or internet banking access, at the service provider.
GyanDhan receives NBFC licence from RBI
GyanDhan, India’s first education financing platform said it has received an NBFC license from the Reserve Bank of India and it aims to disburse Rs 650 crore worth of education loans in FY22.
  • Out of this, Rs 50 crore will be for domestic short-term courses offered by various ed-tech players and coaching institutes.
  • The Delhi-based, digital-first company has already partnered companies including Great learning and various IAS institutions to offer interest-free education loans to prospective students wanting to pursue short-term courses.
HDFC partners with IFC partner to promote affordable green housing finance
HDFC Ltd has got a loan of $250 million from International Finance Corporation (IFC), the investment arm of the World Bank Group, to be used by India’s largest housing finance company for green housing.
  • Green housing is regarded as a luxury market in the country, but has climate benefits. IFC said its partnership with HDFC would help change perceptions about the market. At least 25 per cent of the funding is for green affordable housing.
  • Green affordable housing can help India on its path to deliver on its commitments under the Paris Agreement, to reduce a third of its carbon emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels,

GST collections for July record Rs 1.16 lakh crore
The Goods and Services Tax collection for the month of July rose to Rs 1,16,393 crore, after slipping below the Rs 1 lakh crore mark for the first time in eight months in June, data released by the finance ministry showed.

Forex reserves down by USD 1.581 billion to USD 611.149 billion
The country’s foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 1.581 billion to stand at USD 611.149 billion for the week ended July 23, RBI data showed.
  • The reserves had reached a lifetime high of USD 612.730 billion after rising by USD 835 million in the previous week ended July 16, 2021.
  • Gold reserves were down by USD 449 million to USD 36.884 billion in the reporting week.
CII enters into agreement with SII to speed up vaccination program in partnership with industry including health care providers
Confederation of Indian Industry, CII, has entered into an agreement with Serum Institute of India (SII) to speed up the vaccination program in partnership with industry including health care providers.
  • The vaccination drive will target communities in country’s small towns and rural areas to increase the coverage.

  • The Academic Bank of Credit will provide flexible multiple entries and exit options for students in Higher education.
  • Multiple entry/exit will help students break away from the shackles of sticking to one stream. One can select their course and can exit if they are not interested.
  • The new National Education Policy assures the youth that the country is complete with them and with their spirits. The program of artificial intelligence (AI) launched now will also make our youngsters future-oriented and will create a way for AI-driven economy.
National Health Adaptation Plan on Air Pollution launched by Health Minister
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri. Mansukh Mandaviya presided over the 112th Annual Day celebrations of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) along with Dr. Bharati Pawar, MoS (HFW).  At the event, the Union Health Minister virtually inaugurated the Whole Genome Sequencing National Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and BSL 3 Laboratory along with a PG hostel and Guest House. The L3 laboratory complex has five floors and houses 22 Biosafety level (BSL) II laboratories.
  • The Union Health Minister also launched the National Health Adaptation Plan on Air Pollution and National Health Adaptation Plan on Heat along with infographics and the first newsletter under the "National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health" developed by Centre of Environmental and Occupational Health, Climate Change and Health at NCDC.

Magma Fincorp renamed Poonawalla Fincorp after takeover by Adar Poonawalla
Magma Fincorp has been renamed as Poonawalla Fincorp with effect from July 22 after Adar Poonawalla-led Rising Sun Holdings acquired a controlling stake in the non-banking finance company (NBFC).
  • Rising Sun Holdings had acquired a controlling stake in the NBFC through an equity infusion of Rs 3,456 crore. The transaction was completed on May 21, and Adar Poonawalla was appointed as the company's Chairman on May 31.

Centre's fiscal deficit touch 18.2 pc of annual target at end of June
The Central Government’s fiscal deficit stood at Rs 2.74 lakh crore or 18.2 per cent of the full year’s Budget estimate at the end of June, according to data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA).
  • The fiscal deficit at the end of June 2020 was 83.2 per cent of the Budget Estimates (BE) of 2020-21.In absolute terms, the fiscal deficit was at Rs 2,74,245 crore at the end of June.
  • The fiscal deficit or the gap between expenditure and revenue for 2020-21 was 9.3 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),  better than 9.5 per cent projected in the revised estimates in the Budget in February.

Centenarian Sprinter Man Kaur passes away 
Centenarian sprinter Man Kaur, referred to as 'Miracle from Chandigarh', died of a heart attack. She was 105.
  • The multiple World Masters Games medallist from Patiala, won her first medal at the Chandigarh Master’s in 2010 where she was noticed by David Premnath, general secretary of the Masters Athletic Federation of India.
  • In 2011, she won the 100 metre sprint at the World Masters Games in Auckland in 2017 and held several world records. In 2019, She also won gold in track and field events at the World Masters Athletic Championship in Torun, Poland. Kaur bagged the gold in 60m dash race, 200m sprint, shot put and javelin throw.

Govt proposes to set up National Research Foundation
Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan said that the Government is proposing to set up a National Research Foundation (NRF) to strengthen the research ecosystem in the country.
  • The total proposed outlay of National Research Foundation is Rs 50,000 crore over a period of five years.
  • The NRF is being envisaged as an umbrella structure that will improve linkages between R&D, academia and industry.
Govt aims to create national farmers database using digital land records: Narendra Singh Tomar
Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the government aims to create a national database of farmers and is also in the process of bringing out a data policy for the farm sector.
  • The government aims to create a federated National Farmers Database and the digitised land records will be used as data attributes for creating this database.
  • To bring dynamism to the farmer''s database, the linkage with digital land record management system is essential.
Govt nod to 100% FDI in oil PSUs approved for stake sale
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued an executive order to allow 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) under automatic route for oil and gas PSUs, in case an in-principle approval for strategic disinvestment has been approved by the government.
  • The development was followed by the Union Cabinet’s approval regarding the same on July 22. The move will expand the scope for FDI in the privatisation of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and enable the sale of the government’s 52.98 per cent stake in the company to a foreign buyer.
  • It will also open the door for FDI in other public sector companies in the oil sector put up for privatisation.
Goa Govt Offers AI-based Learning for Students, Ties Up With Jio Embibe
The Goa government has signed an MoU with edu-tech platform Jio Embibe for adaptive learning based on Artificial Intelligence for students, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the Legislative Assembly.
  • Sawant stated the MoU covers students of classes 6 to 12 with an exclusive portal for learning subjects like mathematics and science.

36th Edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol held in Indian Ocean
The 36th edition of CORPAT between India and Indonesia is held in the Indian Ocean region. The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Saryu, an indigenously built Offshore Patrol Vessel and Indonesian Naval Ship KRI Bung Tomo is undertaking coordinated patrol (CORPAT).
  • Besides this, Maritime Patrol Aircraft from both nations are also participating. The exercise is being conducted as a ‘non-contact, at sea only’ exercise in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

FamPay partners with Visa to launch India's first Doodle card
FamPay, a fintech start-up focused on online and offline card payments for teenagers, has launched India’s first Visa prepaid card — FamCard Me — for teenagers with personalised doodles on it.
  • The card will allow teens to make NFC-enabled contactless payments on the Visa network in India.
  •  The card will be available in two different designs – the FamCard and FamCard Me. Teens will be able to design their own card to reflect their personality, playing with names, fonts and doodles.
Yes Bank, Indiabulls Housing Finance sign co-lending agreement
Yes Bank and Indiabulls Housing Finance have entered into a co-lending agreement for home loans.
  • The partnership aims at synergising capabilities to provide an efficient and seamless experience to retail home loan customers.
  • The partnership is in line with Yes Bank’s strategy of expanding its retail franchise through a mix of organic and partnership-led origination models.
RTGS, NEFT payment systems opened up for non-banks in phases: RBI
The Reserve Bank of India said that it has allowed non-banks to participate in its Centralised Payment Systems (CPS) through Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) systems, in a phased manner.
  • To be sure, RBI in April had already said that non-banks would be allowed access to CPS viz. RTGS, NEFT in a phased manner.
  • Till now, only banks were allowed to use RTGS and NEFT payments facilities.
Hughes to connect 1,800 Bank of India sites with satellite broadband
Satellite broadband services firm Hughes Communications India Pvt Ltd (HCIPL) has bagged a deal to connect 1,800 branches of Bank of India across the country.
  • The project will provide satellite connectivity to Aryavart Bank, Madhya Pradesh Gramin Bank (MPGB), Vidharbha Konkan Gramin Bank (VKGB), and Bank of India (BoI) branches that serve rural customers.
  • The network will be provided through Hughes Jupiter system, including routers, gateways and network management designed for high performance and efficiency, using capacity on the GSAT11 and NSS12 satellites.
DBS, Temasek team up for $500 m debt financing platform
DBS and Temasek announced an agreement to jointly launch a $500 million growth stage debt financing platform EvolutionX Debt Capital or EvolutionX.
  • Headquartered in Singapore, EvolutionX will provide non-dilutive financing to growth stage technology-enabled companies across Asia, with focus on China, India, and Southeast Asia.
  • The growth debt capital space presents a significant opportunity and EvolutionX will invest in opportunities arising from an increasingly digital economy, across sectors such as financial services, consumer, healthcare, education and industrial development, to accelerate growth and build the next generation of technology leaders.
LIC CSL launches Co-branded RuPay Credit Cards powered by IDBI Bank
LIC Cards Services Limited (LIC-CSL) and IDBI Bank announced that they've launched two new co-branded RuPay Credit Cards.
  • This LIC card will be designated as the LIC CSL 'Eclat' Select Credit Card and the 'Lumine' Platinum Credit Card. As per the release, the credit cardholder will apparently be able to gain access to a range of new benefits that have been termed, ‘the best in class'.
  • LIC Credit cardholders of the Lumine and Eclat cards will have a credit limit that is tailored to their needs. With every Rs 100 spent on the Lumine card, cardholders will get 3 'delight' points, and on the Eclat card, they will receive 4 points.  They have a validity of 4 years and an interest-free credit period of up to 48 days.
NABARD sanctions Rs 446 crore for drinking water projects in Punjab
National Bank For Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Punjab regional office has sanctioned Rs 445.89 crore under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for five large surface based drinking water projects in Ferozpur, Fazilka, Hoshirapur and Rupnagar districts of Punjab.
  • These projects envisage to provide 70 litre per capita per day potable drinking water at the consumer-end through functional household tap connections covering a rural population of 10.39 lakh in 700 villages.

Nasscom partners with UK government, UK India Business Council
IT industry body Nasscom said it has collaborated with the UK Government's Department for International Trade (DIT) and the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) to address the digital skills gap in that country.
  • IT business physique Nasscom mentioned it has collaborated with the UK Government‘s Division for Worldwide Commerce (DIT) and the UK India Enterprise Council (UKIBC) to deal with the digital abilities hole in that nation. A two-day digital college tour, specializing in expertise acquisition for the Indian tech business, was organised.
  • Nasscom has developed a large-scale skill-building programme, Future Skills Prime in India, which is a partnership between Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Nasscom and the IT industry.
FTCCI enters agreement with Afghanistan Chamber for trade promotion
The Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) has entered into an agreement of cooperation with the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI).
  • During the seminar the State industry body entered into an agreement of cooperation with Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI).
  • The FTCCI and ACCI partnership will play a key role in building bilateral trade and investment.
India possesses 501.83 million tonnes of gold reserves: Union govt
India has an estimated 501.83 million tonnes of gold reserves or resources of gold ore, as per the National Mineral Inventory data.
  • Out of these, 17.22 million tonnes have been placed under the reserves category and the remaining 484.61 million tonnes under remaining resources category, Union Minister of Mines, Coal and Parliamentary Affairs Prahlad Joshi said.
  • The largest resources of gold ore are located in Bihar (44%) followed by Rajasthan (25%), Karnataka (21%), West Bengal (3%), Andhra Pradesh (3% ), and Jharkhand (2 %).
  • The remaining 2% resources of ore are located in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

The Maharashtra government honored singer Asha Bhosle with Maharashtra Bhushan award, the State government’s highest honour for the year 2020.
  • The award, instituted in 1996 by the State government to recognise distinguished work and achievements of eminent persons from the State, representing different walks of life, carries a cash prize of ₹10 lakh and a citation.
India’s 14 Tiger Reserves get Global CA/TS recognition for good Tiger Conservation
On the occasion of International Tiger Day, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav announced that 14 tiger reserves in India have received accreditation of the Global Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS).
  • The 14 tiger reserves, which have been accredited, are Manas, Kaziranga and Orang in Assam; Satpura, Kanha and Panna in Madhya Pradesh; Pench in Maharashtra; Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar; Dudhwa in Uttar Pradesh; Sunderbans in West Bengal; Parambikulam in Kerala; Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka; and Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserves in Tamil Nadu.
  • CA|TS is a globally accepted conservation tool that sets best practice and standards to manage tigers and encourages assessments to benchmark progress.

China plans to build the first 'clean' commercial nuclear reactor
China has unveiled plans to build the first-of-its-kind experimental nuclear reactor that will not require water for cooling and is expected to be safer than traditional reactors.
  • The molten-salt nuclear reactor, which runs on liquid thorium rather than uranium, is expected to be safer because the molten salt cools and solidifies quickly when exposed to the air, insulating the thorium. Hence, any potential leak would spill much less radiation into the surrounding environment in comparison to leaks from traditional reactors.
  • The prototype reactor is expected to be completed next month, with the first tests beginning in September. This will pave the way for the construction of the world's first commercial reactor. It is expected to be constructed by 2030.
SRI Spinout Wingsure develops AI-driven mobile insurance app for small farmers
SRI International announced that its insurtech venture spinout, Wingsure, is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) capabilities to deliver instant access to personalized insurance products for underserved small farmers and communities worldwide.
  • Wingsure noted that the application is aided by SRI’s computer vision, geospatial and AR technology, which can confirm crop damage, identify the validity of insurance claims, and make the settlement.
  • The app features voice prompts and natural language processing, which allows farmers to speak in their native language.
