Head of state of Monaco Prince Albert II arrives in New Delhi



The head of state of Monaco, Prince Albert II arrived in New Delhi on a week-long visit to India. He attended the India-Monaco Business Forum followed by a round-table on energy and climate.

  • He will meet President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 February. The Head of state of Monaco is scheduled to visit Gandhi Smriti. He will also visit Udaipur in Rajasthan before heading home.

20th Bharat Rang Mahotsav inaugurated in New Delhi

The Minister of State for Culture Dr. Mahesh Sharma, inaugurated the 21-day-long nationwide theatre spectacle Bhart Rang Mahotsav at Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi. The 20th edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM), the international theatre festival of India, is organized by National School of Drama (NSD), one of the prominent training institutions in the world. 

  • The National School of Drama (NSD) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture. The 20th BRM comes with 111 national and international acts in its basket that includes folk and other traditional theatre forms, invitee plays, and productions by the students of the National School of Drama.


8000 Health and Wellness Centres have become operational across the country: Govt

Government said that 8000 Health and Wellness Centres have become operational in 35 states and Union Territories. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey, said this while chairing the 6th meeting of the Mission Steering Group of National Health Mission in New Delhi.

  • The government has set a target to set up nearly 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres by 2022.


Assam CM Sonowal inaugurates 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the 2nd ASEAN-Inda Youth Summit in Guwahati and underlined the need for mutual cooperation among the ASEAN countries for strengthening the multilateral relations of the region.

  • He said in the present day world order, friendly relations among the 10 ASEAN countries and three BBN countries are of immense importance for promoting and strengthening the mutual interests like trade and commerce, education, health, connectivity, socio-cultural integration, etc.


India’s Tourism Sector Registers 19% Growth In 2018

Union Minister KJ Alphons has said that the country's tourism sector fetched 234 billion US Dollar revenue last year, registering a growth of over 19%. Delivering the inaugural speech at the 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit in Guwahati, he said the country is ranked third in the tourism sector, according to the 2018 report of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). 

  • This revenue was contributed by 87 per cent domestic and 13 per cent foreign tourists.

Delhi to host international symposium on creativity, freedom

Odisha Govt announces KALIA scholarship scheme for farmers' children

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the new 'KALIA Chhatravritti Yojana', which is a scholarship for the children of farmers who are the beneficiaries of Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme.

  • Under this scheme, the children of farmers, who are the beneficiaries of the KALIA scheme will be provided scholarships for pursuing higher education in professional courses free of cost.

New e-Commerce Policy Comes Into Effect from Feb 1

India’s new e-commerce policy came into effect on February 1, 2019. The implementation has caused widespread disruption for the online retailers, forcing some of them to take down an array of items from their website.  A new set of policy rules were formed for the e-commerce companies. It gave them a 60-day window period for aligning themselves to the government’s modified foreign direct investment (FDI) rules.

  • The new e-commerce norms bar online retailers from selling products through vendors in which they have an equity interest. It also bars them from entering into exclusive deals with brands for selling products only on their platforms.


Indian Online Companies rank 11th for overseas expansion: Singapore and Hong Kong top list

Singapore and Hong Kong are the number one countries when it comes to online companies doing business abroad. India fell just outside the top ten (Ranked 11th) but still ahead of the UK and US.

  • This was revealed in a study conducted by San Francisco-based online payment processing firm Stripe.

Former New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum has announced his retirement from Australia's domestic Twenty20 tournament - Big Bash League (BBL). He would continue to feature in other T20 leagues around the globe before beginning his career as a coach.

Hockey midfielder Navjot Kaur completes 150 international matches

Indian women's hockey team midfielder Navjot Kaur, who climbed the ranks in the national team with significant performances, completed the milestone of playing 150 international matches. The Kurukshetra-born player achieved the feat during her side's match against Ireland in India's tour of Spain.

  • The Indian midfielder also featured in the 17th Asian Games, 2016 Rio Olympics, fourth Women's Asian Champions Trophy and was part of India's silver medal feat at the 2018 Asian Games.

World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is an international day, which is marked on 4th February to increase awareness of cancer, and to encourage its prevention, early detection and treatment. The estimated number of deaths due to cancer in 2018 was 9.5 million, which amounts to a whopping 26,000 deaths a day. This number is expected to increase as environmental stresses increase, air quality worsens, lifestyles and eating habits too.

  • Every year the theme has its own theme. The theme for World Cancer Day 2019 is 'I am and I will'.


National Road Safety Week

Road safety week is a national event aimed at raising public awareness about traffic rules and ultimately to reduce casualties due to road accidents. Millions lose their life and millions get injured in road accidents globally; mainly, due to lack of awareness about traffic rules or a behavior of flouting them. 

  • 30th Road Safety Week 2019 will be celebrated in India from 04th February to the 10th February. There have been various awareness campaigns and events which are being conducted across the country in all the states. Theme for Road Safety Week 2019 is same as last year “Sadak Suraksha-Jeevan Raksha”.

CM Naidu launches 2nd phase of Pasupu-Kumkuma scheme, welfare pensions

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu launched the second phase of Pasupu-Kumkuma (Turmeric-Kumkum) scheme and welfare pensions. Under the second phase of the scheme, women who are a part of Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) will be given Rs 10,000 in three instalments.

  • As many as 94 lakh DWCRA women will be given Rs 10,000 as a grant under the Pasupu-Kumkuma scheme. As much as Rs 9400 crore have been granted for the scheme. Rs 2500 will be given on February 1, Rs 3500 on March 8 and the final instalment of Rs 4000 will be given on April 5.


Indus River Dolphin declared Punjab’s State aquatic animal

One of the world's rarest mammals, Indus River Dolphins has received an exceptional distinction. Found only in India and Pakistan in the Beas river, the generally playful Indus Dolphins have been declared Punjab’s State aquatic animal. The decision was taken in the Punjab State Wildlife Board presided over by the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

Sikkim signs MoU with Microsoft for digital learning

Microsoft India entered into a pact with the Sikkim state government to improve the education system in the state by boosting digital literacy and the knowledge of new-age technology among students and teachers in government schools. Pakistan Army successfully test-fired the short range surface-to-surface ballistic missile 'Nasr' which it claimed can defeat any ballistic missile defence system now available in the country's neighbourhood or any other system being developed.

  • Nasr, with a strike range of about 70-km, is a high precision, shoot and scoot weapon system with the ability of in-flight maneuverability.

Two RRBs to be merged to form Tamil Nadu Grama Bank

Public sector Indian Bank said two regional rural banks (RRBs), Pallavan Grama Bank and Pandyan Grama Bank will be merged to form Tamil Nadu Grama Bank as per the Finance Ministry. The integration will be effective from April 1. 

  • The new Tamil Nadu Grama Bank will be under the sponsorship of Indian Bank with head office in Salem,Tamil Nadu. Originally the Pallavan Grama Bank was sponsored by Indian Bank and Pandyan Grama Bank by Indian Overseas Bank.

Former Pakistan women's cricket team skipper Sana Mir became the first Asian woman cricketer to play 100 T20 international matches. Overall, Sana is the sixth woman cricketer to complete a century of T20 Internationals. Daendra Dottin of West Indies tops the list with a total of 109 T20Is to her name.

  • In the Asian list, Sana is followed by fellow Pakistan cricketer Bismah Maroo (94 T20Is) and India's Harmanpreet Kaur on third position (93 T20Is).


Nepal’s Sundeep Jora youngest man to hit T20 International fifty

Nepal's Sundeep Jora became the youngest cricketer to score a half-century in T20 Internationals. Aged 17 years and 103 days, Jora achieved the feat during a T20I match against UAE in Dubai.

  • Earlier, Nepal's Rohit Paudel etched his name in the history books, becoming the youngest player in international cricket to hit a half-century, surpassing legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Shahid Afridi.

Government sets up committee to explore prepaid payments by discoms to generator companies

The government has constituted a committee under the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to explore prepaid payments by state electricity distribution companies to power plants.  The committee will study working capital cycles of power distribution companies and generation companies and identify gaps contributing to stress in the sector. 

  • The government is also simultaneously looking at a recommendation made by Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha led panel to put in place a bill discounting mechanism. 


Government announces Rs 214.20 crore hike in sports budget

The government hiked the sports budget by Rs 214.20 crore for the financial year 2019-2020, which also includes an increase of Rs 55 crore in funds for the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

  • Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said the overall sports budget for 2019-2020 has been increased from Rs 2002.72 crore (2018-2019) to Rs 2,216.92 crore. While the allocation for the SAI has been hiked from Rs 395 crore to Rs 450 crore.

 Observer Research Foundation named 'highest ranked' Indian think tank

Observer Research Foundation (ORF) has been named the "highest ranked" Indian think tank in the "2018 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. Globally, ORF has been ranked as the top think tank in the "Best New Idea or Paradigm Developed by a Think Tank" category, said the report by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Programme (TTCSP) of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • The US-based Brookings Institution is the highest ranked think tank globally, followed by the French Institute of International Relations and the Carnegie Endowment. ORF is ranked 118th in the "Top Think Tanks Worldwide" (US and non-US) category.

  • ORF, with has three centres in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. is also the highest-ranked Indian think tank for its social media outreach and the use of other such digital mediums.


NBCC to construct Ayurveda and Naturopathy hospital in Goa

State-owned NBCC said it will construct an ayurveda and naturopathy hospital in Goa at a cost of Rs 267.81 crore. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of AYUSH has been signed in this regard.

  • NBCC will complete the 50-acre project in the next 24 months. NBCC is a Navratna enterprise under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. 


2019 Kala Ghoda Arts Festival begins in Mumbai

The Kala Ghoda Art Festival began at the iconic Kala Ghoda precinct in South Mumbai. 20 years ago Kala Ghoda Association was formed with the idea of giving back to the city and the festival was an organic extension of this idea.

Govt revises GDP growth rate for 2017-18 to 7.2% from 6.7%

The government revised the economic growth rate upwards to 7.2 per cent for 2017-18 from the 6.7 per cent estimated earlier.  "Real GDP or GDP at constant (2011-12) prices for 2017-18 and 2016-17 stand at Rs 131.80 lakh crore and Rs 122.98 lakh crore, respectively, showing growth of 7.2 per cent during 2017-18 and 8.2 per cent during 2016-17," the Central Statistics Office (CSO) said.

  • Earlier, the CSO in its advance estimate had pegged the GDP growth rate for 2018-19 at 7.2 per cent.

Smriti rockets to No.1 in ICC WODI rankings

After stunning performances in the first two ODIs against New Zealand, India's opening batswoman Smriti Mandhana has rocketed to the No.1 spot in the latest ODI women's batters rankings, the ICC announced recently.

  • Smriti cracked her fourth ODI century and an unbeaten 90 in India's 2-1 win in the three-match rubber against New Zealand. Indian captain Mithali Raj, who moved down a spot, completes the top five.


Greg Chappell set to retire from Cricket Australia

Greg Chappell, who is considered one of Australia's most influential voices in the field of cricket, is set to exit the stage as the selector and national talent manager following the end of the Ashes later this year.

  • The 70-year-old served as a selector of the formerly known Australian Cricket Board from 1984 to 1988, 2010 to 2011 and 2016 until this year. 


INS Dronacharya wins Kochi Area Boat Pulling Regatta 2019

The 2019 edition of Kochi Area Boat Pulling Regatta, which is one of the most prestigious and traditional naval sporting activities conducted in Indian Navy, was held in Kochi.

Vani Kapoor becomes first Indian to grab Australian LPGA card

Vani Kapoor became the first Indian to earn a card for the Australian Ladies PGA Tour (LPGA) after coming through its first-ever Qualifying Tournament at the Ballarat Golf Club in Australia. Vani shot rounds of 71, 78 and 69 to finish at two-over 218 and was tied-12th with three others.

  • Her finish also ensures Vani starts in three Ladies European Tour events to be played in Australia in February-March.

Former MP police chief RK Shukla appointed CBI Director

Senior IPS officer Rishi Kumar Shukla was appointed as CBI Director, just four days after he was shifted from the post of Madhya Pradesh DGP by the Kamal Nath government to the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation.

  • Shukla, a 1983 batch officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, will have a fixed tenure of two years, according to a decision taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Former IIMC director and Planning Commission member Hiten Bhaya passes away

Former Planning Commission member and ex-director of IIMC Hiten Bhaya passed away at his residence in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj. She was 98. 

  • Bhaya was a member of the Planning Commission in the Rajiv Gandhi government and had also served as director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and chairman of Hindustan Steel.

RBI exempts BoI, BoM, OBC from PCAF

The Reserve Bank of India has exempted Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra and Oriental Bank of Commerce from PCAF (Prompt Corrective Action Framework) following improvements in their capital position and asset quality in the December 2018 quarter.

  • These banks have provided a written commitment that they would comply with the norms of minimum regulatory capital, Net NPA and leverage ratio on an ongoing basis. RBI will continuously monitor the performance of these banks under various parameters.


Govt renames DIPP as Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has been renamed as the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade with a mandate to deal with matters related to start-ups, facilitating ease of doing business among others.

  • The newly-named department under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry will look into matters related to promotion of internal trade, including retail trade, welfare of traders and their employees, facilitating ease of doing business and start-ups.

  • The matters related to internal trade were earlier under the domain of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.


Punjab Government Approves ‘Smart Village Campaign’ Worth Of Rs 385 Crores

The Punjab government approved a rural development scheme worth Rs 384.40 crore to supplement the ongoing works to build village infrastructure and provide essential amenities.

  • Named 'Smart Village Campaign', the scheme would be financed with funds from the 14th Financial Commission and MGNREGA works. The scheme was approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

2019 announced as The International Year of The Periodic Table

The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be launched at UNESCO's Headquarters, Paris. According to a statement from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), events and activities will be held throughout the year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the organisation of the periodic table by Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev, one of the fathers of modern chemistry.

  • At the launch, UNESCO will present its educational initiative, 1001 Inventions: Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry.

Ujjivan Small Finance Bank (SFB) has announced the launch of ‘KisanSuvidha loan’ for small and marginal farmers. The collateral-free loans can be used by farmers for both agriculture and allied activities.

  • Ujjivan has launched the product in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka and Odisha. It provides loans to individuals with an amount ranging from Rs 60,000- Rs 2 lakh.

GST collections for January expected at Rs 103,000 cr

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for January have crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark and is expected to be Rs 103,000 crore, acting Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said. The Rs 1 lakh crore barrier in average monthly collections seen over the past two years had finally been broken this January with the collection for last month expected to be at around Rs 103,000 crore.

  • There has been a significant improvement over collection of Rs 94,725 crore last month (December) and Rs 89,825 crore during the same month last year.


Paytm enters hotel booking business, buys NightStay

Paytm has launched hotel bookings on its platform and acquired NightStay, which offers deals on last-minute bookings at luxury hotels. Paytm said it plans to invest Rs 500 crore in scaling up its travel operations and has partnered with more than 5,000 hotels across the budget, luxury and business segments.

  • Nightstay founder Nasr Khan will lead the hotel-booking services at Paytm.


India's unemployment rate hit 45-year high in 2017-18

India’s unemployment rate rose to a 45-year high during 2017-2018. The assessment by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) conducted between July 2017-June 2018, showed the unemployment rate stood at 6.1 per cent, the highest since 1972-73.

  • The report showed that joblessness stood at 7.8 per cent in urban areas compared with 5.3 parts in the countryside.

  • The five-year agreement includes all ICC events around the world including the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales, the ICC men’s and women’s T20 World Cups in Australia in 2020, the ICC Women’s World Cup 2021 in New Zealand and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India in 2023 amongst other global tournaments.


Mithali Raj becomes first woman cricketer to play 200 ODIs

Mithali Raj became the first-ever women cricketer to play 200 one-day internationals. The ongoing third ODI against New Zealand marks the 200th appearance of the Indian women's ODI team skipper. Indian women have played a total of 263 ODIs in their history and Mithali has been a part of 200 of them.

  • The 36-year-old, who made her ODI debut in June 1999, is serving the game for 19 years and 219 days, now. This is fourth-highest among the men cricketers too as Mithali is just behind Sachin Tendulkar (463), Sanath Jayasuriya (445) and Javed Miandad (233).


Haryana beat defending champions Punjab Royals to lift PWL 4 title

Haryana Hammers won the fourth edition of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) as they outclassed Punjab Royals 6-3 in the summit clash at the Gautam Buddha University indoor stadium in Greater Noida. 

  • Haryana Hammers, turned the tables on the defending champions Punjab Royals winning all the first five bouts of the evening to clinch the title.

BARC India elects Punit Goenka as chairman

The MD and CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL), Punit Goenka has been elected as the new chairman of Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC). He will be taking over from Nakul Chopra, a senior advisor at Publicis.

  • Goenka was the founder Chairman of BARC India and played an instrumental role in setting up of the TV Viewership measurement company.


Senior bureaucrat Ramesh Abhishek given additional charge as Civil Aviation Secretary

The government gave senior bureaucrat Ramesh Abhishek additional charge as Secretary of Civil Aviation Ministry. Abhishek holds the position of Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

  • Abhishek takes over from R.N. Choubey who retired recently. He will join the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as a member.










OBITUARIES


Former Test umpire Dara Dotiwalla passes away



Former umpire Dara Dotiwalla, who officiated in the famous tied Test match between India and Australia in 1986 at Chennai, passed away. He was 85. Dotiwalla had also officiated in eight One Day Internationals (ODIs) from 1982 to 1988.
