PM releases ₹1,625 cr of funds to women self-help groupsThe Prime Minister Narendra Modi released capitalization support funds to the tune of Rs. 1625 Crore to over 4 lakh Self Help Groups (SHG).
- In addition, he released Rs. 25 crore as seed money for 7500 SHG members under the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme of Ministry of Food Processing Industries and Rs. 4.13 crore as funds to 75 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) being promoted under the Mission.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government will fortify the rice distributed to the poor via different schemes such as Midday Meal in a bid to address the problem of malnutrition. ”Malnutrition and lack of micro-nutrients are affecting the growth of poor children.
- Modi, who hoisted the tricolour at the historic Red Fort before the speech, said whether through ration shops or the Midday Meal scheme, the rice made available under every government programme will be fortified by the year 2024.
- Currently, out of the 15 states identified for the ’Central scheme on fortified rice and its distribution via public distribution system (PDS)’, five are implementing it in one district each on a pilot basis.
- Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh have started distributing fortified rice — mixed with nutrients — in their respective identified district.
The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Delhi, has become the first hospital in India to house a fire station inside the hospital premises, its Director Dr Randeep Guleria said.
- Making the announcement at a function to mark the 75th Independence Day, he said that the AIIMS has joined hands with the Delhi Fire Service for the purpose.
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurated the world's second-largest refurbished state-of-the-art National Gene Bank at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), Pusa in New Delhi.
- The refurbished state-of-the-art National Gene Bank provides the facility for germplasm, to secure the heritage of seeds for years in minus 20 degrees Celsius temperature.
- The new facility will help in the conservation of the diversity of indigenous crops in the country, as well as benefit the farmers by making them self-reliant and providing a source of increasing their income.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel greeted people on the country's 75th Independence Day and announced the creation of four new districts in the state as well as development of parks exclusively for women in all districts of the state.
- Taking the process of decentralisation further, four new districts will be created - namely Mohla-Manpur, Sakti, Sarangarh-Bilaigarh and Manendragarh, while 18 new tehsils will also be formed.
- The four new districts will take the total number of administrative districts in the state to 32.

HCL Foundation launches ‘My e-Haat’ portal to empower artisansHCL Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of HCL Technologies, launched an online portal, 'My e-Haat', to empower artisans and strengthen the value chain of the handicraft sector in the country. Currently, more than 30 partners from eight states with over 600 products are listed on the portal, it said adding that more will be joining from across the country by the end of the year.
- My E-Haat' initiative will be a unique model (A2C) where artisans will connect with the customer directly in the coming years.
- The portal will assist in showcasing the ingenuity of skilled artisans from all over the country in front of the globe, resulting in increased recognition, appreciation, and remuneration.

Neeraj Chopra achieves number 2 spot in World Athletics rankingsIndia's javelin ace Neeraj Chopra moved up 14 places to become World No. 2 as per the latest World Athletics Men's Javelin Rankings.
- Neeraj won a historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, leading India to its best-ever haul in the Olympics with seven medals — a gold, two silvers and four bronze medals.
- With a mammoth 87.58m throw, the 23-year-old Chopra clinched India's maiden Olympics athletics. He became only the second individual Olympic gold medalist for India after Abhinav Bindra won shooting gold in 2008.
Young Indian Grandmaster Raunak Sadhwani emerged winner in the 19th Spilimbergo Open chess tournament with seven points from nine rounds.
- The 15-year old Sadhwani (Elo 2579) remained undefeated in the tourney, notching up five wins and four draws. Seeded fourth, the Indian faced five GMs in the event and beat Oskar Wieczorek of Poland and drew his games against the four others.
- His wins came against Italian Joshuaede Cappelletto, Aron Pasti of Hungary, Lorezno Lodici of Italy and France’s Loic Travadon.

Malaysian PM Muhyiddin resigns as political crisis escalatesMalaysia's Muhyiddin Yassin has stepped down as prime minister after months of political turmoil culminated in the loss of his majority.
- Mr. Muhyidddin’s departure comes less than 18 months after taking office and will plunge the country into a fresh crisis amid a worsening pandemic.
- Political leaders have already begun to jostle for the top post, with his deputy Ismail Sabri rallying support to succeed Mr. Muhyiddin and keep the government intact.
Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has defeated incumbent Edgar Lungu in Zambia's presidential election, the electoral commission said when releasing the final results from 156 constituencies, barring one.
- In the final tally, Hichilema secured 2,810,777 votes while Lungu was in second place with 1,814,201 votes, out of 7 million registered voters.

OBITUARIES
Former India defender Chinmoy Chatterjee passes awayFormer India defender Chinmoy Chatterjee, who played for the three Maidan heavyweights in his prime in the 1970-80s, died of cardiac arrest at his Khardah residence. He was 68.
- He was a member of the Arun Ghosh-coached Indian team at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games. He also played a key role in Mohammedan Sporting's CFL triumph in 1981.Chatterjee also represented Bengal in the Santosh Trophy four times, with the team becoming champions in three of them.
- After his retirement, he was appointed assistant coach of East Bengal and worked with the likes of the legendary PK Banerjee and Shyam Thapa.
Germany great Gerd Mueller, widely regarded as one of the game's greatest goalscorers and nicknamed "Bomber der Nation", has died at the age of 75, his former club Bayern Munich said.
- Mueller scored 68 goals in 62 international matches for West Germany, winning the World Cup in 1974, and is third in the all-time list of most goals in the competition with 14 goals behind Ronaldo (15) and Miroslav Klose (16).
